Chapter 6 - Dismantling the Nightstand

Lily’s bedroom smelled faintly sweet, masked beneath the sharp, ozone tang of hot circuitry that I had previously dismissed as the scent of the nearby baseboard heater. The pastel pink walls and floating bookshelves filled with fairy tales looked jarringly innocent compared to the forensic equipment laid out on her floral rug.

On the small wooden nightstand sat the rabbit lamp. It was cast in off-white porcelain, depicting a sitting hare with painted black eyes and long ears. The shade was made of pleated linen. To an untrained eye, it was an endearing vintage piece.

A technician wearing thick nitrile gloves used an ultraviolet wand to sweep the surface. Under the specialized spectrum, strange crystalline residues fluoresced an eerie, glowing yellow along the base and the seams of the ceramic molding.

"Lead-based solder and unshielded lithium venting," the technician remarked, his voice flat with clinical disgust. "And look at the bulb socket."

Using a non-magnetic screwdriver, he carefully unscrewed the frosted glass bulb. What lay underneath was not a standard socket. The threaded interior had been milled out to house a dense, custom-machined aluminum cylinder equipped with a heat sink and a series of micro-perforations.

"What is that?" I asked, my voice cracking from the doorway. "What did he put beside my baby?"

"This isn't a retail nightlight," Detective Hayes said, crouching down beside the technician. "This is an active surveillance and directional transmitting module with an unshielded power transformer running at hazardous temperatures."
