Chapter 8 - The Severing of Ties

The following afternoon, the private hospital room at Dell Children’s was flooded with soft sunlight. Sophia sat propped up against a mountain of pillows, wearing clean pink pajamas that buttoned down the front so nothing touched her healing back.

She was eating strawberry ice cream, giggling softly as a pediatric nurse drew cartoon butterflies on her arm cast.

The door clicked open, and Mark entered, accompanied by an officer who waited outside.

He had posted bail using personal assets, but he looked completely broken. His expensive suit was crumpled, his eyes bloodshot, and his hands shook as he closed the door.

“Sophia...” Mark whispered, taking a hesitant step toward the bed.

Sophia’s smile vanished instantly. She dropped her plastic spoon into the ice cream bowl and pulled the blanket up to her chin, pressing herself back against the pillows.

“Daddy,” she whispered, her voice tiny and terrified. “Are you mad at me?”

Mark flinched as if struck by a whip. “No, sweetheart. No... Daddy is so sorry.”

“Leave,” I said, stepping between him and the bed.

“Danielle, please,” Mark pleaded, tears streaming down his face. “I didn't know Mother had taken out a life insurance policy! I swear to God, I thought she just wanted the conservatorship! She convinced me it was the only way to save the family business from bankruptcy! She controlled me my whole life!”

“You are a thirty-four-year-old man,” I said, my voice ice cold. “You were her father. Your job was to protect her from the monsters, Mark. Instead, you opened the door and held Sophia down while your mother fed her to them.”

Mark collapsed onto his knees on the hospital floor, burying his face in his hands. “What am I supposed to do? I’ve lost everything. The board ousted me this morning. The press is camping outside my apartment. The police are preparing felony charges against me as an accessory.”

“You’re going to plead guilty,” I said, looking down at him with utter disgust. “You are going to sign the emergency sole custody papers my lawyer drafted this morning. You are going to surrender every claim to Grandfather Sterling’s trust fund, every claim to our marital assets, and you will sign away your parental rights permanently.”

Mark looked up, horror in his eyes. “You’re taking my daughter away from me forever?”

“You gave her away the night you told me to leave her alone because you had an early meeting,” I replied. “Sign the papers, Mark, or Detective Miller will ensure that every single text message you exchanged with Theresa is read aloud to a federal grand jury.”

Mark looked at Sophia, who refused to meet his eyes, hiding her face in her stuffed rabbit.

Broken and entirely defeated, he pulled a pen from his jacket and signed the papers resting on the bedside table. He stood up slowly, a hollow ghost of the man I had once married, and walked out of the room without looking back.

The door clicked shut, and for the first time in three years, the air in the room felt pure.
