Chapter 7 - The Cornered Wolf

Theresa descended the stairs slowly, her designer heels clicking against the wet tarmac. Even surrounded by police, she tried to drape herself in the phantom armor of her social status.
“Do you have any idea who I am?” she projected her voice over the drizzle, glaring at Detective Miller. “My late husband built half of this city! I demand to see my attorney!”
Miller didn't flinch. She stepped forward, handcuffs ready. “Theresa Sterling, you are under arrest for attempted kidnapping, aggravated assault on a child, human trafficking, and conspiracy to commit murder.”
Theresa’s gaze shifted to me, burning with venomous hatred. “You pathetic little nobody,” she snarled, her voice dropping into a guttural rasp. “You ruined everything. Mark was destined for greatness. That money belonged to our bloodline—to a son who could carry the Sterling empire forward! Not to a weak, useless little girl!”
The words should have hurt, but they felt hollow, powerless against the roaring fire inside my soul.
I walked up to her, stopping inches from the barrier the officers formed around her.
“Sophia is not weak,” I said, looking directly into her dead, aristocratic eyes. “She survived you. She survived your needles, your poison, and your cruelty. And she will inherit every single cent your husband left behind. She will grow up knowing that her grandmother is rotting in a maximum-security prison.”
Theresa lunged at me, her manicured claws reaching for my face. “She is a curse! She took what was mine!”
Two tactical officers tackled her instantly, driving her to the wet asphalt. Her briefcase flew open, scattering forged bank transfers, offshore account numbers, and medical forged affidavits across the runway puddles.
As the officers cuffed her hands behind her back, Theresa screamed into the pavement—a raw, inhuman shriek of pure, unadulterated defeat.
Miller picked up the scattered documents, securing them in evidence bags. She looked over at me, giving a faint, respectful nod. “It’s over, Danielle. She’s never getting out of a cage.”
I turned my back on Theresa’s screams and walked toward the warmth of the terminal.
