Chapter 10 - The Reckoning

The high-definition video feed began with the violent rocking of the yacht deck against the pitch-black sky. The audio was crystal clear, remastered by federal forensic audio specialists.
*“Daniel! Please!”* my recorded voice screamed through the ballroom speakers, sending shockwaves through the audience. *“I'm your wife!”*
On the screen, Daniel’s face appeared in terrifying, high-resolution detail, looking down with chilling disgust.
*“Not for much longer, Claire. You should've stayed out of my business.”*
A horrified roar erupted from the crowd. Several women screamed. Arthur Pendelton shoved a security guard aside, staring at the screen in pure revulsion.
The recording continued, merciless and unyielding. The camera angle shifted downward, capturing Vanessa’s diamond earrings sparkling in the deck light as she leaned down over my bleeding fingers.
*“Help you?”* Vanessa’s recorded laugh echoed through the ballroom, sounding vile, demonic, and unmistakably real. *“Claire, I've spent twenty years watching you have everything I deserved. Your money. Your marriage. Your perfect little life. Now it's my turn.”*
Then came the visual of Vanessa’s pointed heel coming down on my fingers, followed by the sickening, wet crunch of bone and my blood-curdling scream.
*“FINISH IT!”* Daniel’s voice barked from the screen. *“We have a funeral to arrange!”*
The screen showed my hand slipping, the splash of the black waves, and then nothing but static.
The ballroom lights snapped back on.
Daniel had collapsed behind the lectern, trembling uncontrollably, his hands over his ears as if trying to block out the sound of his own betrayal. Vanessa was hyperventilating, backing toward the side exit, her eyes darting like a cornered animal.
She reached the brass doors, only for them to swing open violently.
A dozen armed federal agents, led by SEC Special Agent Vance, stepped through the entrance, blocking every escape route.
“Vanessa Cross,” Agent Vance announced, his badge gleaming in the lights. “Daniel Whitmore. You are under arrest for attempted first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, corporate embezzlement, and wire fraud.”
Vanessa spun around, her face twisted in hysterical fury, pointing an accusing finger at Daniel. “It was him! It was all Daniel! He planned it! He opened the offshore accounts! He told me to step on her hands!”
“YOU BITCH!” Daniel screamed, scrambling up from the floor and lunging toward her, his dignity completely shattered. “You signed the Swiss transfers this morning! You stole fourteen million dollars from me!”
Before they could tear at each other, federal agents swarmed the stage. Daniel was slammed face-first against the mahogany podium, the handcuffs clicking shut behind his back. Vanessa was forced to her knees, screaming curses and weeping as the grandmother’s sapphire necklace was gently unclasped from her neck by an agent and bagged as evidence.
I walked up the stage stairs, looking down at Daniel as he lay pinned against the wood.
He looked up at me, his eyes wild with desperate, cowardly pleading. “Claire... please... baby, listen to me... she seduced me... she manipulated me... I love you, Claire, please!”
I looked down at him with nothing left in my heart—no anger, no grief, only pure, untainted indifference.

“You’re right about one thing, Daniel,” I whispered softly. “You do have a funeral to arrange. Your own.”
