Chapter 6 - The Velvet Trap

Before the final blow, there was one more piece of bait Daniel and Vanessa could not resist taking. Greed is a predictable poison; once it infects the bloodstream, reason completely disappears.

At noon on Friday, Vanessa received a confidential phone call from a private Swiss wealth consultant named Henri Laurent—in reality, a top forensic operative hired by Julian. Laurent informed her that an auxiliary blind trust belonging to the Whitmore estate had been discovered in an offshore depository in Geneva, holding bearer bonds worth an estimated $14 million. The catch? The funds could only be claimed by a designated secondary beneficiary before the primary estate passed through probate.

Vanessa met Laurent in the private lounge of a secluded hotel in Midtown. We monitored the entire meeting via a pinhole camera in the operative’s lapel.

She sat across from him, sipping sparkling water, her vanity radiating like toxic perfume.

“Are you certain Daniel Whitmore has no knowledge of this trust?” Vanessa leaned forward, her voice low and conspiratorial.

“None whatsoever, Madame,” the operative replied with impeccable European formality. “Your name was added as an alternate signatory eight months ago, during a confidential portfolio review. If you sign the authorization papers today, the bonds will be transferred directly to an anonymous shell account in your name only. Monsieur Whitmore will never see a cent.”

Vanessa didn’t hesitate for a single second. She didn’t wonder why her supposed best friend would name her to a secret trust. She didn’t hesitate to betray Daniel, the very man with whom she had plotted my murder.

“Where do I sign?” she purred, taking a gold fountain pen from her designer purse.

She scrawled her name across three documents. Those documents were not Swiss deposit authorizations; they were sworn affidavits of financial diversion, formalizing her personal involvement in the systematic embezzlement of Whitmore Capital. By signing, she had independently confessed to grand larceny, conspiracy, and money laundering under federal statutes.

As she walked out of the hotel lounge, clutching what she believed was the confirmation receipt for $14 million, Julian let out a low whistle.

“Honor among thieves,” he muttered with disgust.

“There never was any honor between them,” I said, rising from my chair. The pins in my hand still throbbed, but I no longer felt the cold. “Daniel murdered me for money. Vanessa helped him out of jealousy. They deserve each other—and they deserve what’s coming tonight.”

Michael closed his files and looked at me with immense respect. “The federal marshals have been briefed. Special Agent Vance from the SEC is in position. All that’s left, Claire, is the curtain call.”

I walked to the closet and pulled out the dress Julian’s team had prepared. It was a replica of the gown I had worn the night they pushed me into the sea—midnight blue silk, shimmering like deep water beneath the moonlight.

“Call the driver,” I said. “It’s time to attend my own funeral.”
