Chapter 7 - The Trap is Sprung

At Walter Reed, the sun had cleared the horizon, filling Chloe’s room with warm, golden light.

Her vitals had finally stabilized. The fetal monitor continued its rhythmic, reassuring cadence: *thump-thump, thump-thump, thump-thump*.

Eleanor Hayes entered the room, stripping off her surgical gloves and offering me a tired, triumphant smile.

"Her preeclampsia markers have plateaued," Eleanor said, checking the monitors. "The medication worked. The baby’s lungs are mature, and Chloe’s uterine pressure is manageable. We don't have to rush into an emergency cesarean right this second, Evelyn. We can deliver her safely under controlled, calm conditions at noon."

Chloe opened her eyes, looking between me and the Admiral. "Mom? Is it... is it really over?"

Before I could answer, my secure phone buzzed with an incoming video feed from the main gate of the military base.

Marcus’s voice came over the speaker. "Evelyn, we have a situation at the visitor perimeter."

I stepped out into the hallway and brought the screen to my eye level.

At the main security checkpoint on Rockville Pike, three black SUVs with tinted windows were parked bumper-to-bumper behind a private ambulance. Standing in front of the vehicle was not Julian Thorne—he was already in federal custody in Philadelphia—but his father, Arthur Thorne, the eighty-two-year-old patriarch of the Thorne dynasty, flanked by three high-priced corporate attorneys.

Arthur Thorne was a man who had bought governors, appointed judges, and dictated regional politics for half a century. He stood with a silver-tipped walking stick, his eyes blazing with the inherited arrogance that had poisoned his son.

"Let me speak to General Vance," Arthur Thorne was demanding to the young Marine corporal at the gate. "My family built the medical infrastructure of this region. You are harboring a fugitive and a stolen child. If my daughter-in-law is not returned to St. Jude’s Memorial within fifteen minutes, I will have the Secretary of the Army on this phone personally stripping your commander of his commission!"

I pressed the transmit button. "Arthur."

The old man froze, turning his gaze toward the security camera mounted above the guard shack.

"Evelyn," he hissed. "Call off your dogs. Julian called me from the federal building. What kind of madness is this? You are destroying our family name over a domestic dispute that could have been handled behind closed doors!"

"A domestic dispute?" I repeated, my voice carrying the weight of thirty years of command. "Your son systematically beat my daughter. He planned to murder her on an operating table to steal her child and control her trust fund. He kept a ledger of women he slaughtered under the cover of surgical complications. And you knew about it, didn't you, Arthur?"

The old man’s mouth worked soundlessly for a moment, his withered skin blanching beneath the autumn sun.

"Julian is... Julian is an exceptional talent," Arthur stammered, his attorneys desperately whispering into his ear to remain silent. "He has saved thousands of lives! A man of his stature cannot be held to the petty standards of ordinary people! We offered Chloe everything! A life of luxury! A lineage!"

"You offered her an execution," I said. "And as for your political connections, Arthur—take a look at the news crawl on your phone."

Behind Arthur, one of his attorneys was already staring at his iPad with a look of pure horror.

Every major news network in the country had just broken the story:

*BREAKING: FBI RAIDS ST. JUDE'S MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. CEO DR. JULIAN THORNE ARRESTED ON FEDERAL CHARGES OF HEALTHCARE CONSPIRACY, DEPRAVATION OF CIVIL RIGHTS, AND SYSTEMIC MATERNAL HOMICIDE.*

Arthur Thorne swayed on his feet, his silver-tipped stick slipping in the wet gravel.

"Corporal," I instructed the Marine guard at the gate. "Escort Mr. Thorne and his legal counsel off the federal installation. If they return, place them in holding for trespassing on a military post."

"Yes, General," the corporal snapped, stepping forward with his rifle held at port arms.

I closed the screen.

The fortress of glass had fallen. The Thorne dynasty was being systematically dismantled by the wheels of federal justice.
