Chapter 5 - Extracting the Evidence

While Admiral Hayes stabilized Chloe’s blood pressure on the fourth floor of Walter Reed, Marcus, Sarah Lin, and I took over a conference room in the hospital’s administrative wing.

Sarah’s phone had not stopped vibrating for two hours.

"Julian has filed emergency kidnapping warrants in the state court," Sarah reported, scrolling through legal notifications on her tablet. "Judge Hastings signed them thirty minutes ago without a hearing. He issued an immediate writ of habeas corpus demanding the production of Chloe Thorne at St. Jude’s Memorial by zero-eight hundred."

"Hastings is on the payroll of the Thorne Charitable Trust," Marcus noted, pulling up financial disclosures. "His daughter received a full four-year scholarship funded by Julian’s mother. The paper trail is blindingly obvious."

"Let Hastings sign whatever he wants," I said. "Maryland is out of his jurisdiction, and Walter Reed is a federal military reservation. State warrants have zero authority here. But Julian is not going to rely solely on paper. He knows that once Chloe delivers safely, his leverage evaporates. He needs Chloe back in his operating room to destroy the evidence of her physical abuse and silence her permanently."

"He’s already moving on that front," Javier announced, spinning his laptop around.

On the screen was an intercepted audio file recorded twenty minutes earlier from Julian Thorne’s personal cellular line. Javier hit play.

The voice was that of Dr. Julian Thorne, speaking to a private security contractor known for aggressive corporate asset recovery.

*"—don't care about the legal status of the facility,"* Julian’s recorded voice hissed. *"My wife is being held against her will by her mentally unstable mother at a military facility in Maryland. I am her legal guardian under state medical conservatorship. I have an ambulance team with two armed security officers en route to transfer her. If the military guards interfere, notify the press that the Army is illegally detaining a civilian patient in medical crisis."*

Sarah shook her head in disbelief. "He’s going to attempt an administrative extraction under the guise of an inter-hospital transfer. He thinks he can use public relations to force the base commander to release her."

"He underestimates the chain of command," I said.

I picked up the secure landline on the conference table and dialed an unlisted number at the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.

The phone rang twice before being answered by a voice I had known for twenty years: Assistant Attorney General David Vance, my oldest brother.

"Evelyn," David answered, his tone brisk and alert. "I have the preliminary package Marcus transmitted. Is Chloe safe?"

"She is at Walter Reed under Eleanor Hayes’s care," I said. "Her blood pressure is critical. Eleanor is prepping her for delivery within the next twelve hours. But Julian Thorne is mobilizing state law enforcement and private contractors to breach federal jurisdiction."

"Not on my watch," David replied with absolute finality. "The United States Attorney for the Eastern District just signed off on a federal indictment under the Hobbs Act, Title 18, Deprivation of Civil Rights Under Color of Law, and healthcare fraud involving federal Medicare reimbursements. Julian Thorne’s entire medical empire is officially under federal criminal investigation as of four minutes ago."

"What about his operating room?" I asked. "The historical files on those previous maternal deaths?"

"FBI agents from the Baltimore and Philadelphia field offices are staging two blocks from St. Jude’s Memorial right now," David stated. "We have sealed search warrants for every server, every surgical log, and Julian’s private office safe. We hit them at zero-six hundred."

"Make sure the surgical suite is secured first, David," I warned. "Operating room four. That is where he hides his tracks."

"Understood, General. Watch your perimeter at Walter Reed. Thorne is desperate. A desperate narcissist does not calculate odds; he lashes out."

The line went dead.

I turned to Marcus. "Arm the security detail at the main gate. If an unauthorized private ambulance attempts to breach the perimeter, detain everyone inside under Title 10, section 800 of the Military Code. Nobody enters this hospital without my personal authorization."

Marcus gave a short, crisp nod. "On it."

I walked back down the quiet, carpeted corridor toward Chloe’s room. Through the heavy safety glass, I could see her sleeping peacefully under the soft glow of the fetal monitor. Beside her bed, Eleanor Hayes was adjusting the IV line, her expression calm, competent, and completely unbothered by the storm brewing outside the gates.

I pressed my hand against the glass.

May you like

*You made a promise that my daughter wouldn't survive her delivery, Julian,* I thought. *Now I am going to make you a promise of my own.*
