Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail

The Miller Aerospace headquarters towered over downtown Atlanta, a forty-story monument of reflective glass, black steel, and unbridled hubris. It was nine o'clock in the morning, and the corporate plaza was bustling with executives, lobbyists, and attorneys carrying leather briefcases.
None of them paid attention to the three black federal utility vehicles that pulled up directly onto the granite pedestrian plaza, blocking the main revolving doors.
I stepped out of the lead vehicle. I had shed my desert fatigues, replacing them with my Army Service Uniform, adorned with the combat infantryman badge, paratrooper wings, and ribbons of a decade of service. Flanking me were Major Hayes, two special agents from the Department of Defense Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS), and four armed Military Police officers.
The private security guards in the lobby panicked as our boots clattered across the polished marble.
"Sir! You cannot bring weapons into this facility—" the chief lobby guard started, reaching for his hip.
Major Hayes flashed a thick red-jacketed document in his face. "Federal Warrant of Search and Seizure under the Espionage Act and National Defense Authorization Statute. This entire facility is now an active federal crime scene. Stand down or be taken into federal custody immediately."
The guards froze. We bypassed the electronic turnstiles, took the executive elevator bank, and hit the button for the penthouse floor: the executive suite of Amanda Miller, Chief Financial Officer.
When the elevator doors chimed open on the fortieth floor, the serene, museum-like silence of the executive offices was shattered.
Amanda Miller was standing at the end of the long mahogany conference table, coffee cup in hand, reviewing a digital presentation with five corporate attorneys. She looked radiant, dressed in a tailored cream suit, her hair styled to perfection, wearing the same arrogant smirk she had worn outside Rosalie's hospital room.
The smirk died instantly when she saw me march into the boardroom.
"Alexander?" she stammered, spilling coffee onto the polished wood. "What is the meaning of this? Security! Security, get these people out of here!"
"Your security is currently face-down on the lobby floor, Amanda," I said, walking slowly down the length of the conference table.
"You're insane!" Amanda shrieked, backing away toward the panoramic window overlooking the city skyline. "You think you can intimidate me? Mother is meeting with the Governor right now! You'll be stripped of your rank by noon!"
"Your mother can meet with the President of the United States, Amanda. It won't change what's in that safe behind your desk."
Amanda's face turned completely ash-gray. The blood drained from her cheeks so fast she looked like a corpse in designer clothes.
"I don't know what you're talking about," she lied, her voice cracking into a high, shrill register.
"Special Agent Miller," Major Hayes addressed the DCIS investigator. "Crack the wall safe. Authorization code provided by primary material witness Hannah Miller."
"Hannah?" Amanda gasped, horror dawning in her eyes. "Hannah talked to you?"
"Hannah told me everything," I said, leaning over the conference table, pinning Amanda with a gaze that had broken hardened insurgent commanders. "She told me how you forged the metallurgical test certificates for the armored troop carriers. She told me how you pocketed forty-five million dollars in subcontracting kickbacks. And she told me how you stood on the kitchen floor in our home, wearing your Christian Louboutin heels, and watched Viktor Kane crush Rosalie's bones."
The corporate attorneys gathered around the table gasped, instantly stepping away from Amanda as if she were radioactive.
"Amanda, is this true?" one of the senior partners whispered in horror.
"Shut up! Don't say a word!" Amanda screamed at the lawyers, her composed veneer shredding into hysterics. "Alexander, you have nothing! You have zero proof! It's your word against mine!"
"Safe is open, Major," the DCIS agent announced from behind the executive desk.
He pulled out a heavy, ruggedized black external drive, alongside a velvet jewelry box. He opened the jewelry box. Inside rested a single gold cufflink, bearing the initials *V.K.*, matching the one I had recovered beneath my kitchen floorboards.
"Drive secured," the agent said. "Digital forensic markers match the DOD compliance audit Rosalie Sinclair was preparing."
Major Hayes stepped forward, pulling a pair of stainless steel handcuffs from his tactical belt. "Amanda Miller, you are under arrest for treason, procurement fraud against the United States, conspiracy to commit murder, and attempted murder. You have the right to remain silent."
"Get your filthy hands off me!" Amanda fought violently, kicking her heels and thrashing like an animal as Hayes expertly caught her wrists and clicked the cuffs into place behind her back. "Mother will destroy you for this! Mother will burn your life to the ground, Alexander! You hear me? She will kill Rosalie and she will kill you!"

"Your mother isn't burning anything," I said quietly, leaning down until my lips were inches from her ear. "Her empire is already turning to ash."
