Chapter 8 - The Law and the Keyhole

The heavy chimes of the front door echoed through the manor, shattering whatever pathetic plea Gene had prepared next.

A moment later, Mrs. Gable, the longtime housekeeper who had endured Gene’s condescension for nearly two decades, appeared in the doorway. There was a faint, unmistakable glimmer of satisfaction in her tired eyes.

"Mr. Henderson is here, Brandon," she announced quietly. "Along with two associates from the firm."

"Send them in, Mrs. Gable," Brandon said. "Thank you."

Arthur Henderson entered the dining room. At seventy-one, with silver hair and an impeccably tailored charcoal suit, he had been Arthur Vance’s closest confidant and primary counsel for forty years. He carried a heavy leather briefcase, which he placed methodically upon the sideboard.

"Good morning, Genevieve," Henderson said, his voice clipped and entirely professional. "Richard. Julianne."

"Arthur," Gene gasped, clutching her pearls. "You can’t allow this. Brandon is manipulating Arthur’s wishes! This is an outrage! Arthur loved me!"

"Arthur loved his family, Genevieve," Henderson replied evenly, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. "And because he loved his family, he spent the final months of his life ensuring that your vindictiveness would not outlive him."

Henderson unlatched his briefcase and pulled out a stack of documents bearing the official seal of the Westchester County Surrogate's Court.

"As of eight o’clock yesterday morning, following the formal notification of breach provided by Brandon, the emergency injunction was signed by Judge Miller," Henderson announced, handing a copy directly to Richard, who took it with trembling hands. "The life tenancy granted to Genevieve Vance under Clause 14 of the Vance Family Trust is officially revoked."

"Revoked?" Julianne cried out. "She’s seventy-two years old! Where is she supposed to go?"

"The trust maintains a comfortable, two-bedroom condominium in White Plains," Henderson answered without missing a beat. "Purchased specifically by your late father for this exact contingency. The trust will provide a living allowance of four thousand dollars per month. All country club memberships, luxury vehicle leases, and personal staff allowances tied to the manor are terminated effective immediately."

"Four thousand dollars?" Gene shrieked, rising from her chair, her face contorted in disbelief. "My skincare costs four thousand dollars! The maintenance on this house alone is twenty thousand a month!"

"Which will no longer be your concern," Henderson said, his voice devoid of pity. "Because by five o’clock this evening, you are required to vacate the premises."

Gene froze. "Today? It’s Boxing Day!"

"You have six hours to pack your personal effects," Henderson stated firmly. "The locks will be changed at sunset. Any attempt to remove heirloom furniture, silver, or trust-owned artwork will be treated as grand larceny."

He turned to Holly, his stern face softening into a warm, grandfatherly smile.

"Good morning, Miss Holly," Henderson said with a respectful nod. "Your grandfather would have been exceptionally proud of you today."
