Chapter 5 - The Secret of Arthur’s Will

"Read it aloud, Mother," Brandon commanded, his voice cutting through the suffocating tension of the dining room. "Or would you prefer I have Henderson read it when he arrives?"

"Henderson?" Gene whispered, the paper slipping from her numb fingers and landing flat on the linen. "You called Arthur’s attorney? On Boxing Day?"

"He’s been waiting at the gatehouse since eight this morning," Brandon replied coldly.

Richard finally found his voice, dropping his fork with a sharp clatter. "Brandon, what the hell is going on? What is that key? What paper?"

"It’s Dad’s actual will," Brandon said, turning his gaze toward his brother. "The one written three weeks before he died. The one Mother thought she had negotiated away during probate."

The dining room fell into stunned silence.

Julianne gasped, covering her mouth. Richard stood up, his face flushing crimson. "What are you talking about? Dad left everything to Mom! The house, the trust, the estate—Mom is the sole executor!"

"Mom was granted a *conditional life estate*," Brandon corrected him, his words dropping like lead weights. "Dad knew exactly who she was, Richard. He spent forty years watching her weaponize money, exclude people, and discard anyone who didn't bow to her vanity. When he was diagnosed with terminal cancer, he realized that the moment he was gone, she would tear this family apart based on who kissed her ring."

Brandon walked toward the head of the table, gently resting his hand on Holly’s shoulder. Holly leaned into his touch, steady and secure.

"Dad set up the primary trust holding this manor, the family foundation, and the ancestral holdings," Brandon continued. "Mother was granted the right to live here, draw a monthly stipend, and manage the household *on one single condition*."

Gene buried her face in her trembling hands, letting out a pitiful, shuddering breath.

"What condition?" Julianne asked, her voice shaking.

Brandon reached down, picked up the folded document, and read the underlined passage aloud:

*"Should Genevieve Vance at any time act to alienate, disinherit, or intentionally humiliate any recognized child or grandchild of this family, the life estate shall terminate immediately. Sole executorship and full ownership of the Vance Family Trust, including the Manor and its grounds, shall transfer instantly to my son, Brandon Vance, or his designated direct heir."*

Brandon lowered the paper. "And three months ago, after our adoption finalized, I executed the formal transfer of designated heirship."

The air left the room in an audible rush.

"The key on this table," Brandon said, looking straight into his mother’s horrified eyes, "is the master key to the estate deeds and the vault. And the legal owner of this house... is not you, Gene. It isn't even me."

He looked down at Holly.

"It’s Holly."
