Chapter 5 - The Collapse of Bennett Logistics

At eight-fifteen in the morning, Mason Bennett’s world began to disintegrate with the speed and violence of a controlled demolition.
He had not made it to the Stone estate. He was still in his Mercedes SUV, sitting in traffic on Interstate 85, when his central phone line lit up with fifty-four urgent alerts within a seven-minute window.
I sat in Garrett’s private office, watching the live financial terminal displayed on the wall-mounted screen.
Arthur Vance stood near the display, pointing a laser marker at a series of red line items that were dropping like stones off a cliff.
"SunTrust was the primary institution holding Bennett Logistics' commercial credit facilities," Arthur explained, his tone completely clinical. "At eight-one, based on a formal notification from Stone Global Enterprises that we were withdrawing all secondary guarantees, SunTrust issued an immediate freeze on Mason’s twelve-million-dollar operating line."
"Which means?" I asked, watching a bright red graph plummet toward zero.
"Which means Mason cannot clear payroll for his hundred and twenty truck drivers this morning," Arthur replied. "Furthermore, the forty-two million dollar acquisition deal with Apex Bio-Tech was contingent on Mason securing a ten-million-dollar escrow deposit by eight-thirty AM."
"Where was the escrow deposit coming from?"
"A bridge loan from Atlantic Capital," Arthur said with a dark smile. "A loan that was cross-collateralized against three commercial warehouses in Savannah that Mason believed he owned."
"Believed?" I looked at my father.
Garrett took a quiet sip of his coffee. "Those warehouses were owned by a holding company called Crestview Assets. Mason thought Crestview was an independent real estate firm in Delaware. In reality, Crestview is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Stone Global."
I stared at the screen. "You bought his warehouses?"
"Four years ago," Garrett said smoothly. "He was leasing them back from me at a twenty percent discount without ever knowing I was the landlord. Ten minutes ago, Crestview declared Bennett Logistics in material breach of lease terms due to unauthorized structural modifications and non-payment of property tax adjustments."
"Which means Atlantic Capital canceled the loan," I realized, the picture forming in my mind.
"Precisely," Arthur chimed in. "Apex Bio-Tech has already pulled out of the acquisition deal. In fact, their chief legal officer just issued a press release citing 'unforeseen financial instability and potential corporate fraud' at Bennett Logistics."
My phone rang again.
It was not Mason this time.
The screen displayed: Chloe Palmer.
I tapped the speaker button.
"Alyssa!" Chloe’s voice was high-pitched, frantic, completely stripped of the cold, condescending elegance she had used whenever I called her office to ask about Daisy's medical claims. "Alyssa, you need to tell your father to stop! The sheriff’s deputies are at the corporate headquarters right now! They’re locking the front doors! They’re impounding the server rooms!"
I sat back against the leather cushion, swirling the tea in my porcelain cup.
"Hello, Chloe," I said calmly.
"Are you insane?" Chloe shrieked through the speaker. "Mason’s entire life work is being destroyed! We have four freight ships sitting at the Port of Savannah that can't dock because the tugboat operators were informed our accounts are frozen! The port authority is threatening to impound the cargo!"
"Where is Hannah?" I asked softly.
The shouting on the other end of the line stopped instantly.
"What?" Chloe stammered.
"Your sister, Hannah," I repeated, my voice as calm as a frozen lake. "How is her eye procedure going at Palmetto Aesthetic Clinic this morning?"
"I... I don't know what you're talking about—"
"I think you do, Chloe," I said. "You used nine thousand dollars from my daughter’s medical account to pay for Hannah's surgery yesterday afternoon. The nine thousand dollars that was meant to buy the drug that kept Daisy alive."
"It was an advance!" Chloe screamed, her composure cracking completely. "Mason promised me that the Apex deal would close by midnight! He said the acquisition funds would cover all internal transfers before anyone noticed! We didn't know the pharmaceutical distributor would hold the delivery overnight!"
"You took her life for nine thousand dollars," I said, my voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "So that your sister could have prettier eyes."
"Alyssa, please! Hannah is only twenty-one! She has nothing to do with this!"
"Neither did Daisy," I replied. "She was three."
I reached over and muted the line, leaving Chloe’s desperate muffled cries echoing uselessly from the phone.
Garrett stood up from his chair, buttoning his dark suit coat.
"Arthur," Garrett said, turning to his lawyer. "Has the District Attorney received the forensic documentation regarding the unauthorized diversion of medical trust funds?"
"Delivered directly to DA Vance’s desk twenty minutes ago, sir," Arthur replied. "Along with the wire transfer receipts signed by Chloe Palmer and co-signed by Mason Bennett."
"Good," Garrett said. He looked at me, his eyes filled with a stern, protective light. "It is nine o'clock, Alyssa. It is time for us to go visit your husband."
"Where is he?" I asked, standing up and setting my teacup down.
"He isn't in his office," Garrett said with a cold, terrifying smile. "The police have already cordoned off Bennett Logistics headquarters. Right now, Mason is standing in the lobby of Stone Global Tower downtown, begging my security detail to let him up to my penthouse."

My father held out his arm to me.
"Let’s go show him what a real confrontation looks like."
