Chapter 7 - The Mastermind’s Gambit

By 8:00 AM, the morning sun broke through the Boston fog, casting a pale golden light over the city skyline.

Inside the grand study of the Moretti estate in Wellesley, Victor Moretti stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, a glass of double-aged scotch in his trembling hand. Across the room, Arthur Barrett paced angrily back and forth over a priceless Persian rug, his face red with uncontainable rage.

"Your son just wiped out Nikolai’s entire team at the Fish Pier!" Arthur shouted, slamming his hand onto a marble side table. "Two of my transport vans were intercepted by state troopers on Route 128! The federal authorities have frozen sixteen of our commercial accounts! What the hell is happening, Victor?!"

Victor took a slow, bitter sip of his scotch, staring out at the manicured lawns of his thirty-acre estate. "My son is doing what I raised him to do, Arthur. He is eliminating his competition."

"We were supposed to be his allies!" Arthur spat out. "My daughter is currently locking herself in her bedroom because her name is being dragged through every high-society gossip column in New England!"

Before Victor could answer, the heavy double mahogany doors of the study burst open.

Dominic walked inside.

He wasn't carrying a weapon in his hand. He wore a fresh charcoal suit, a dark silk tie, and a dark wool overcoat draped over his broad shoulders. Walking behind him were six uniformed officers from the Massachusetts State Police, led by the Assistant District Attorney of Boston—a man who had spent ten years trying to build a case against Victor Moretti.

Victor slowly turned around, setting his scotch glass down on his desk. "Dominic. You brought federal law enforcement into my home?"

"I didn't bring them to arrest you for syndicate operations, Father," Dominic said calmly, walking up to the massive mahogany desk and setting a thick black folder down on the polished wood. "I brought them to serve a warrant for child endangerment, grand conspiracy, and the illegal coercion of a witness."

Arthur Barrett took a step back, looking nervously at the state troopers. "This has nothing to do with me! I'm leaving!"

"Sit down, Arthur," the Assistant District Attorney commanded firmly, stepping between Barrett and the door. "Your name is listed on three of these offshore wire transfers."

Victor looked down at the folder on his desk, his face aging ten years in a matter of seconds. "You think a paper trail can destroy me, Dominic? I built this empire before you were born."

"You built an empire on fear, Father," Dominic said, stepping closer, looking his father directly in the eye. "You thought you could buy Clara off. You thought you could hide my sons from me for six years and force me into a loveless marriage just to expand your territory. But you made one fatal mistake."

"And what was that?" Victor rasped.

"You assumed I was as cold as you," Dominic said softly. "You thought power was the only thing I cared about. But power is useless if you have nothing to protect."

Dominic turned to the state troopers. "Gentlemen, the encrypted server logs containing the full transaction records for the Wellesley estate are in that drawer. Take them into custody."

Two troopers stepped forward, placing hand-cuffs over Victor Moretti’s wrists. The sixty-five-year-old mob boss didn't struggle. He simply looked at his son—the heir who had outmaneuvered him, outfought him, and completely dismantled his legacy in less than twelve hours.

"You've won, Dominic," Victor whispered as he was led toward the door. "You are the head of the Moretti family now. But remember... this life always demands a price."

"I’ve already paid my price, Father," Dominic said, watching his father being led away in chains. "Six years of missing my children. And I am never paying it again."
