Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Syndicate

The revelation of the hidden audio files shifted the prosecution into overdrive. Within forty-eight hours, the Franklin County District Attorney’s office, in coordination with the Ohio Attorney General’s Special Investigations Unit, executed simultaneous search warrants on Sterling Construction headquarters and Evelyn’s boutique consulting office.

What they uncovered was a financial house of cards that shocked even the seasoned investigators.

For seven years, Evelyn Sterling had orchestrated a systematic embezzlement and kickback racket. She had set up three separate shell companies—*Midwest Supply Partners*, *Buckeye Architectural Resources*, and *Tri-State Concrete Logistics*. None of these companies had warehouses, trucks, or employees. They existed solely as bank accounts operated out of a post office box in Delaware.

Grant would order sub-par construction materials at rock-bottom prices from liquidators. Evelyn’s shell companies would intercept the paper trail, generate fake invoices showing top-tier premium materials, and bill the unsuspecting clients for the inflated difference. Over eight million dollars had been siphoned out of private homes, commercial projects, and civic infrastructure developments.

The subcontractors, who had been silenced for years by Grant’s threats of blacklisting and non-payment, began turning state’s evidence in droves.

Mark Ruiz, a veteran framing contractor who had worked on four of Grant's major subdivisions, sat down with investigators and laid out the structural compromises Grant had forced him to make.

“He told us to skip every third anchor bolt on the foundation sills,” Ruiz confessed on camera, wiping sweat from his forehead. “I told him it violated county seismic and wind codes. He told me if I didn't frame it the way he wanted, he’d withhold two hundred grand in back pay and make sure I never pulled another permit in this state. He said his mother had the city inspectors on retainer.”

By Friday afternoon, the city building department dispatched emergency inspection teams to three occupied subdivisions built by Sterling Construction. Two commercial buildings were issued immediate evacuation orders due to critical deficiencies in load-bearing structural columns.

The local media descended upon the Sterling properties like a storm. TV news helicopters circled above Evelyn’s historic brick mansion in Bexley, broadcasting footage of federal agents carrying out boxes of financial records and hard drives.

Grant, out on bail through a high-interest surety bond posted by an offshore associate of Marcus Vance, was trapped inside his mother’s Bexley estate. His contractor’s license had been suspended indefinitely. His bank accounts were frozen under a federal asset seizure warrant. His name was radioactive.
