Chapter 4 - The Arraignment and the Bail Maneuver

The Franklin County Municipal Court was packed with reporters, subcontractors, and curious onlookers by Wednesday morning. The local news had caught wind of the story: *Prominent Local Builder and Mother Indicted on Aggravated Assault, Kidnapping, and Fraud Charges.*
Grant sat at the defense table wearing a charcoal suit that was a size too large. Without his hair gel and custom tailoring, he looked diminished—a petulant, frightened boy stripped of his unearned authority. Evelyn sat beside him, stone-faced, staring straight ahead as if the courtroom were merely an uncivilized train station she was forced to pass through.
Marcus Vance stood at the lectern, projecting an aura of righteous indignation.
“Your Honor, my clients have deep roots in this community. Mr. Sterling has employed hundreds of local tradespeople. What we have here is an unfortunate, alcohol-fueled domestic dispute between spouses that has been wildly sensationalized by the prosecution. Mrs. Sterling has made outrageous allegations in an attempt to leverage an advantageous divorce settlement. We request bail be set at an unsecured personal recognizance bond.”
Assistant District Attorney Karen Mitchell stepped forward, placing a thick manila folder on the podium.
“Your Honor, the State requests remand without bail, or in the alternative, a cash bond of no less than two million dollars each,” Mitchell stated firmly. “The State possesses verified, time-stamped digital evidence from the 911 dispatch center and high-definition interior security feeds. The court will hear Mrs. Evelyn Sterling explicitly ordering her son to inflict blunt-force trauma to the victim’s body while actively avoiding the facial area to evade detection. Furthermore, less than forty-eight hours ago, Mrs. Evelyn Sterling violated a temporary protection order by directly threatening the victim’s life over a recorded cellular line.”
A collective gasp swept through the courtroom gallery. Marcus Vance turned sharply toward Evelyn, whose face remained rigid, though her jaw twitched with unmistakable fury.
Judge Alvarez adjusted her glasses and looked down at the defense table with palpable disgust.
“Mr. Vance, your argument regarding a simple domestic dispute insults the intelligence of this court. The audio transcripts provided in this preliminary hearing reveal an astonishing level of calculated cruelty.” The judge leaned forward, her voice cutting through the silent room like a razor.
“As to Grant Sterling: bail is set at one point five million dollars, cash or surety. In the event of release, he is subject to Level Three electronic ankle monitoring, surrendering of all firearms, and a total no-contact order covering the victim, her workplace, and her legal counsel. As to Evelyn Sterling: given the direct evidence of witness intimidation while on pre-trial release, bail is set at one million dollars cash, with identical restrictions. If either defendant comes within five hundred yards of Elena Sterling, their bonds will be revoked instantaneously.”
The gavel slammed down.

As the bailiffs led Grant away in handcuffs, his gaze locked onto mine in the second row. For six years, that look would have made my stomach drop into a pit of panic, sending me scrambling to apologize for things I had never done. Now, sitting beside my advocate, I held his stare until he blinked, looked down at his cuffed wrists, and was pushed through the heavy wooden door into holding.
