Chapter 5 - The Silent Estate

Sirens wailed in the distance, their high-pitched cries cutting through the sound of the rain outside.
Daniel had called 911 the moment he reached the main foyer, placing Margaret on the living room sofa beneath three heavy fleece blankets he had stripped from the upstairs bedrooms. He had turned on the gas fireplace using the manual valve, filling the room with a warm amber glow.
Within seven minutes, two Greenwich emergency medical technicians burst through the front door, followed by three uniformed police officers with their hands resting on their holstered weapons.
"Mr. Mercer?" the lead officer asked, shining a flashlight into the room.
"Over here," Daniel commanded. His voice was no longer that of a frightened son; it was the voice of a man who had taken command of a disaster. "Severe hypothermia. Stage two or three. She was trapped in an industrial freezer at minus eighteen Celsius for over eleven hours. Start warm IV fluids immediately."
The paramedics moved with practiced speed, wrapping Margaret in thermal foil, placing an oxygen mask over her face, and checking her vitals.
"Core temp is eighty-nine degrees," the female EMT reported, her face grim. "Pulse is weak and irregular. We need to transport her to Greenwich Hospital right now."
Daniel walked beside the stretcher as they wheeled Margaret toward the front door. He held her cold hand until they reached the back of the ambulance.
"Danny," she whispered from beneath the mask, her eyes wide with terror. "Don't let her get away with it. She said she was leaving the country tonight. Midnight flight from Newark."
Daniel squeezed her fingers gently. "I won't let her, Mom. You rest. I will be at the hospital as soon as I speak to the detectives."
The ambulance doors slammed shut, and the vehicle sped down the driveway, its lights painting the wet willow trees in flashes of blue and crimson.
Daniel turned back toward the house. Detective Thomas Vance of the Greenwich Police Department was standing in the foyer, examining the broken basement door with a heavy Maglite.
"Your mother told the paramedics her daughter-in-law locked her in," Vance said without turning around. "Care to tell me what’s happening in this house, Mr. Mercer?"
Daniel walked over to the shattered doorframe. "My wife, Vanessa Mercer, attempted to murder my mother to cover up corporate espionage. She is traveling with an attorney named Marcus Vance or someone from Blackwood Crest Advisory. They are heading for an international flight out of Newark tonight."
The detective frowned, turning to look at Daniel. "That's quite an accusation. We were here at eleven this morning, sir. Your wife was completely cooperative. She seemed calm."
"Of course she was calm," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a register of icy contempt. "She is a sociopath. She was waiting for my mother to die of exposure while she packed our offshore accounts and intellectual property into a suitcase. Come downstairs. I’ll show you."
Daniel led the detective down into the basement. In the far corner, behind a false partition wall made of decorative cedar paneling that concealed the main furnace, a heavy fireproof door stood wide open.
Inside the small, hidden room, the scene was chaotic.
Cables had been ripped out of wall sockets, their copper cores exposed and sparking faintly against the damp concrete. Two commercial server racks were empty, their mounting brackets bent where the hard drives had been forcibly pried loose with a screwdriver. On the metal desk in the center of the room lay several shredded legal folders and an empty passport wallet.
Detective Vance stepped into the vault, his flashlight beam catching a dark smudge on the edge of the steel desk.
"Is that blood?" Vance muttered.
"Test it," Daniel said. "It’s probably my mother's from when they dragged her down here. Or Vanessa's from tearing out those drives."
Daniel stepped toward the desk and noticed a single piece of heavy cream cardstock that had fallen into the narrow gap between the desk and the concrete wall. He reached down and retrieved it.
It was an itinerary printout from a private aviation charter service at Teterboro Airport, not Newark.
Aircraft: Gulfstream G550. Tail Number: N782BC. Departure: 11:45 PM EST. Destination: Zurich, Switzerland. Passengers: Vanessa Mercer, Arthur Pendelton.
Daniel looked at his watch.
