Chapter 4 - The Iron Room

"Mom!"
Daniel plunged down the basement stairs, nearly slipping on the wet concrete steps. The beam of his flashlight cut through the damp subterranean darkness.
The basement of the Greenwich mansion was vast, divided into an old wine cellar, an unfinished storage area, and a commercial-grade pantry room that had been installed by the previous owner, a hedge fund manager who fancied himself a master chef. At the end of the stone corridor stood the walk-in refrigeration unit—a heavy, galvanized steel box the size of a shipping container, equipped with an industrial cooling compressor on its roof.
The external digital temperature display on the freezer door glowed faintly in the dark, powered by an auxiliary backup battery: -18°C.
Zero degrees Fahrenheit.
Across the heavy latch of the freezer door, someone had wedged a four-foot steel pry bar, jamming the release mechanism so that no pressure from inside could ever push the door open. But someone else—or the same person—had recently tried to wrench it free; the pry bar was crooked, jammed halfway into the latch housing.
"Mom! Are you in there?!" Daniel screamed, throwing his entire weight against the steel door.
A muffled, shuddering gasp came through the insulated panel.
"Danny... please..."
Daniel gripped the pry bar with both hands. The metal was slick with condensation and freezing to the touch. He braced his boots against the concrete frame and pulled with all the strength in his body. His muscles strained; his hands burned as the skin stuck to the chilled iron. With a sharp, screeching crack, the bent bar popped out of the latch and clattered across the stone floor.
Daniel threw the heavy latch upward and wrenched the door open.
A blast of sub-zero fog poured into the warm basement air.
Curled in the far corner, beneath metal shelves stacked with frozen meats and vintage wines, was Margaret Mercer.
She was wearing only her flannel nightgown and a thin wool cardigan. Her silver hair was frosted with white crystals of ice. Her skin had turned an unnatural, translucent blue, and her lips were purple. She was shivering with such violent spasms that her teeth clicked together in a terrifying rhythm, her arms wrapped around her knees.
"Mom! Mom, look at me!"
Daniel fell to his knees on the frosted metal floor, threw his wool overcoat around her frail body, and gathered her into his arms. She was as cold as a marble statue. Her fingers were curled into rigid claws, the skin on her knuckles split from clawing at the interior safety handle—which had been unbolted and removed entirely from the inside panel.
"Danny... you came..." she gasped, her voice barely a wheeze.
"I’m here. I’ve got you. Don't talk. Just breathe."
He lifted her easily—she felt as light as a bundle of dry twigs—and carried her out of the freezer into the relatively warmer air of the basement. He laid her on an old rug near the stairs, took off his suit jacket, and wrapped it around her legs, rubbing her arms vigorously to restore circulation.
"Call... the police..." she whispered, her eyes fluttering.
"They're coming, Mom. I'm taking you to the hospital right now."
"No... not just the hospital..." She reached out with stiff, trembling fingers and gripped the lapel of his shirt. Her grip was surprisingly desperate. "The safe room... behind the furnace. Vanessa... she didn't work alone. There was a man. He had a gun, Danny."
Daniel froze. "What man?"
"The lawyer... from the firm. Blackwood. He came at noon. They thought... they thought I was already dead. They threw me in there at eight this morning, Danny. Twelve hours. I only survived because I pulled the cardboard boxes over myself... and the compressor kicked off for two hours when the power surged."
Daniel felt a cold fury igniting in his chest, burning away the panic, leaving behind a hard, crystalline clarity.
"What did they take, Mom?"
Margaret swallowed, her throat dry and rattling. "The server. In the hidden vault behind the furnace. Vanessa had a computer setup down here. She was copying your files... your company’s source code. The Dubai patents. She was selling them to the Chinese consortium through Blackwood. I found the thumb drives in her desk yesterday while looking for my medication."
She began to weep, tears freezing on her pale cheeks.
"I told her I was going to call you. She looked at me, Danny... and her face was completely blank. Like she had never seen me before. She pushed me down the stairs, dragged me into the cold room, and shut the door. She said... she said you would think I had wandered in during an episode of dementia."
May you like
Daniel looked at his mother’s bruised wrists and the cuts on her fingers where she had scratched against the steel door.
His wife hadn't just committed a financial crime; she had orchestrated an execution.
