Chapter 9 - The Sovereign Mark

The days that followed the Solstice banquet were marked by a profound transformation across the entire Blackwood syndicate.
The news of Ronan’s decisive purge spread through the criminal underworld like wildfire. The Hail syndicate was shattered, their assets absorbed into Blackwood holdings with terrifying efficiency. Julian Vance's empire dissolved overnight. But the most shocking revelation to high society was the woman who now accompanied Ronan Blackwood to every negotiation, every council meeting, and every public appearance.
Ivy Lancaster did not hide in the shadows of the estate.
Under Ronan’s unyielding protection, she blossomed. She took control of the Blackwood charitable foundations, redirecting millions of dollars from corrupt political bribes into the impoverished districts of the lower city—rebuilding schools, funding medical clinics, and clearing the predatory debts that had enslaved families like her own for decades.
She was seen at the city’s grand opera house, draped in custom midnight-blue silks and royal velvets that accentuated her voluptuous figure, her natural radiance defying every shallow standard the elite clung to. The same women who had once sneered at her now bowed their heads with nervous respect, knowing that a single word from Ivy could make Ronan Blackwood crush an empire.
One crisp morning in early spring, Ivy sat in the East Wing library, reviewing the final restoration of Dominic Blackwood’s 1892 ledger. The binding was supple, the gold leaf gleamed under the morning sun, and the cipher had finally been completely decoded.
Footsteps echoed softly on the parquet floor.
Ronan walked into the sunlight, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit—the very suit he had worn the night he returned home and caught the whip mid-air. In his hand, he carried a small, velvet-lined mahogany box.
"Is the work finished?" he asked, stopping beside her desk.
Ivy smiled, running her hand lovingly over the leather cover. "It's complete. Your grandfather’s history is safe, Ronan. Every word. Every memory."
Ronan looked at the book, then looked at Ivy. His eyes softened with a devotion that bordered on religious reverence.
"Then it's time to begin our own history," he said.
He opened the mahogany box and set it on the desk before her.
Inside, resting on black velvet, was not a delicate, flimsy diamond ring meant for a society coquette. It was the Blackwood Sovereign Ring—a heavy, intricately wrought band of rose gold, set with a massive, flawless raw emerald surrounded by a halo of black diamonds. It was the ring worn by the matriarch of the Blackwood dynasty, untouched since Dominic’s wife had passed forty years ago.
Ivy’s breath caught in her throat. She looked from the ring up to Ronan, her heart racing.
"Ronan... this is your grandmother’s ring."
"It belonged to a woman who helped build this empire from ash," Ronan said, stepping around the desk and kneeling on one knee before her chair—a man who had never knelt before kings, senators, or death itself. He took her soft, trembling hand into his own scarred palms. "It belongs to the mistress of this house. To my partner. My equal. My wife."
"Are you sure?" Ivy whispered, tears shimmering in her eyes. "Society will never stop whispering."
Ronan’s jaw set into that familiar, lethal line, a fierce smile curving his lips. "Let them whisper. And the first one who dares raise a voice against my Queen will learn precisely why the Blackwood family rules this city."
He looked up at her, his voice softening into pure tenderness. "Will you marry me, Ivy?"
Ivy leaned forward, her hands framing his rugged, scarred face, feeling the warmth and absolute certainty of his love.
May you like
"Yes," she breathed, a radiant smile breaking across her face. "A thousand times, yes."
