Chapter 6 - The Solstice Banquet

The Winter Solstice Gala was the most critical night on the Blackwood social calendar.

Held in the grand dining hall, the long banquet table of solid mahogany seated forty people—the highest-ranking capos, financiers, and political allies of the syndicate. Vivien Hail sat at the foot of the table, resplendent in a shimmering silver gown that clung to her thin frame like snake scales, diamonds glittering at her throat. Julian Vance sat three seats down, exuding smug confidence.

Whispers buzzed around the table as guests noticed the empty chair at the head of the table, right next to Ronan Blackwood’s master seat.

"Where is our host?" Senator Vance asked, sipping a vintage red. "I thought this evening was to officially announce the formal union between the Blackwoods and the Hails."

"Ronan has had some domestic matters to attend to," Vivien announced with a practiced, tragic sigh. "It seems one of the staff members has been caught misappropriating estate funds. Security is searching her quarters as we speak."

"Disgraceful," Lady Eleanor chimed in smoothly. "The lower classes simply have no gratitude."

The double doors of the banquet hall swung open with a resounding boom.

Silence swept across the room like a sudden frost.

Ronan Blackwood walked through the threshold. He wore a midnight-blue velvet tuxedo that emphasized his broad shoulders and commanding height. But it was not Ronan who caused forty people to freeze with their silverware halfway to their mouths.

It was the woman on his arm.

Ivy Lancaster looked breathtaking. She wore an off-the-shoulder gown of rich emerald-green velvet, tailored specifically to celebrate and embrace every lush, voluptuous curve of her body. The heavy fabric swept down to the floor, her collarbones kissed by the warm candlelight, her thick, dark curls pinned up in an elegant Gibson tuck, held by an antique gold comb inlaid with pearls—an unmistakable heirloom from the Blackwood family vaults.

She did not cower. She did not lower her gaze. Guided by the steady, unyielding pressure of Ronan’s hand on her lower back, she held her head high with the regal grace of a queen.

Vivien’s fork clattered loudly onto her porcelain plate. "What is the meaning of this?"

Ronan escorted Ivy directly to the empty seat at the head of the table, pulled out the heavy carved chair with courtly deference, and seated her himself before taking his own place at the head.

"This," Ronan said, his voice echoing with absolute authority across the silent hall, "is the curator of the Blackwood estate. And my guest of honor."

"She is a thief!" Vivien burst out, unable to contain her rage any longer as she stood up, pointing a trembling, manicured finger at Ivy. "Marco caught her snooping in the private wing! And if you send your men to search the servant dormitories right now, you will find three stolen Jersey port bonds in her trunk!"

A heavy, suffocating silence descended on the table. Julian Vance leaned forward, his eyes glinting with malicious anticipation.

Ronan slowly poured himself a glass of water, took a measured sip, and set the crystal down.

"You mean these bonds, Vivien?"

Ronan reached inside his jacket and pulled out a thin envelope of manila paper. He tossed it onto the center of the table. Three folded sheets of blue bond paper slid out across the polished wood, stopping right beside Julian Vance’s plate.

Vance’s face went pale as milk.

"How... how did you get those?" Vivien stammered, the color draining completely from her cheeks.

"My butler Malcolm has served this house for forty years," Ronan said smoothly, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "He knows every floorboard, every keyhole, and every corrupt breath drawn within these walls. Did you truly believe your clumsy little guard could sneak into Ivy's quarters without my men watching his every step through the security mirrors?"

Ronan leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table. The air in the room felt ionized, crackling with impending slaughter.

"Those bonds carry Julian Vance's private signature," Ronan stated, turning his gaze toward the smuggler. "The same serial numbers stolen from the Jersey port authority last Tuesday. The same port authority Julian was supposed to be managing under my contract."

"Ronan, wait—let's talk about this like businessmen," Vance stammered, reaching for his inner jacket pocket.

He never cleared his holster.

Before Vance’s hand could emerge, four Blackwood enforcers stepped out from the shadows behind the draperies, suppressed pistols drawn and leveled directly at the back of Vance’s neck.
