Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips

The heavy mahogany doors of Vincent Moretti’s ground-floor study clicked shut with the finality of a prison cell.

Outside, the estate had awakened into a fortress at war. Over thirty armed guards in black tactical gear prowled the perimeter under the command of Marco Russo, Vincent’s long-time enforcer and cousin. The two intruders had been dragged down to the reinforced basement for questioning, leaving the nursery cordoned off by cleanup crews who worked with bleach and soundless efficiency.

Inside the study, silence reigned.

Emma and Noah had been settled into Vincent’s master bedroom under the watchful eyes of two senior guards Vincent trusted with his life. Now, only two people remained in the cavernous room: Vincent, sitting behind his sprawling antique desk, and Hannah Mercer, standing erect on the Persian rug.

Vincent had placed his Glock on the leather blotter between them. Next to it lay Hannah’s personnel file, stamped with the seal of *Prestige Domestic Placements*, one of Manhattan’s elite staffing agencies.

"Hannah Mercer," Vincent read aloud, his eyes never leaving hers. "Twenty-nine years old. Degree in Early Childhood Education from Boston College. Five years with the Vanderbilt-Cross family in Connecticut. References describe you as 'exceptionally quiet,' 'timid around confrontation,' and 'prone to anxiety in crowded environments.'"

Hannah stood with her hands clasped in front of her. The beige cardigan was ruined, stained with blood and soot, but her posture was impeccable. "A thorough background check, Mr. Moretti."

"I ran your fingerprints through the FBI’s AFIS system nineteen days ago," Vincent continued, his jaw tightening. "Clean. I ran your dental records through international databases. Clean. You were a ghost until six years ago." He leaned forward, resting his forearms on the desk. "A ghost who just executed a modified Russian Sambo arm-bar on a six-foot-two mercenary carrying Eastern European military-grade hardware."

Hannah sighed. The sigh wasn't nervous; it was tired.

"His name was Grigori," Hannah said evenly. "He trained with the Ukrainian Berkut before going freelance. He favors leading with his left elbow in close-quarters combat because of an old shrapnel injury to his right shoulder. It leaves his ribcage open on the inward pivot. It’s an easy exploit if you know what to look for."

Vincent’s gaze narrowed. "And how do you know what to look for?"

Hannah reached up, unpinned the practical knot of hair at the base of her neck, and let her dark brown hair fall around her shoulders. She reached into her pocket, removed a small velvet pouch, and dropped it onto the desk next to the gun.

It made a metallic clink.

Vincent reached out and tipped the contents onto the wood. Out rolled a dog tag made of blackened titanium, devoid of any name or country, bearing only a nine-digit alphanumeric sequence and a stylized insignia: a dagger entwined with an olive branch.

Vincent’s breath caught slightly. He recognized the insignia. It wasn't government. It belonged to *The Aegis Network*, a defunct black-budget private intelligence collective that operated out of Geneva during the mid-2010s, specializing in asset extraction and high-threat counter-surveillance. They took contracts governments couldn't touch.

"They called me Vesper," Hannah said. "I spent seven years pulling the children of diplomats and cartel defectors out of war zones. Kidnap-and-ransom recovery. Counter-extraction."

"And you retired to wipe applesauce off five-year-olds?" Vincent scoffed, his skepticism razor-sharp. "You think I'm an idiot? Who put you in my house? Was it the Tarasov syndicate? The Castiglione family? Did they plant you here to wait for the right moment?"

"If I wanted your children dead, Mr. Moretti," Hannah said, her voice dropping to a chill that rivaled the winter night, "they would have died nineteen days ago in their sleep, and you would have buried them without ever suspecting foul play. If I wanted you dead, you would have suffered a coronary event from an untraceable potassium chloride injection while drinking your midnight espresso."

The silence stretched, thick with tension. Vincent did not reach for the gun, but the veins on his neck corded.

"Then why are you here?" Vincent demanded.

May you like

Hannah met his gaze directly. "Because Claire hired me."
