Chapter 10 - The New Foundation

Two weeks later, the sun broke over Montauk.

The Atlantic was a shimmering expanse of sapphire and gold, the winter chill finally retreating before the first gentle breath of early spring.

On the private beach below the Moretti coastal estate, Emma and Noah were running along the tide line. Noah was chasing gulls, flapping his arms and laughing wildly, while Emma carried a small plastic bucket, carefully collecting smooth sea stones.

On the wooden deck of the main house, Vincent Moretti stood leaning against the railing, holding a mug of black coffee.

His left shoulder was still bound in medical tape beneath his linen shirt, but the dark, hollow exhaustion that had haunted his eyes for eight months was gone. Across the harbor, the Moretti syndicate was at peace. Don Carmine had ratified Vincent’s absolute authority over the ports; Salvatore’s loyalists had been completely dismantled; and the Commission had declared the nursery breach an act of treason that would never be repeated.

The sliding glass door behind him opened softly.

Hannah stepped out onto the deck. She wore dark jeans, a navy blue wool sweater, and a windbreaker. In her hand, she carried a duffel bag.

Vincent didn't turn around, but his posture shifted. "The car is waiting in the driveway?"

"Yes," Hannah said, stopping beside him at the railing. "Marco offered to drive me to JFK."

Vincent looked down at the children on the beach. "Noah asked if you were coming to his soccer practice on Saturday."

Hannah looked down at her hands. Her knuckles were still faintly bruised, but her nails were clean, her horn-rimmed glasses resting comfortably on her nose. "You don't need a counter-extraction specialist anymore, Mr. Moretti. The threat is neutralized. The escrow account from Claire has been settled. My contract is fulfilled."

"Claire contracted an operative," Vincent said, turning to face her. "I am offering a position to Hannah Mercer."

Hannah met his gaze. "What position?"

Vincent set his coffee mug down on the railing. He reached into his coat pocket and withdrew a small velvet box. He opened it, revealing not a diamond, but a heavy bronze key stamped with the Moretti family crest—the key to the estate, the private vaults, and every door that guarded his life.

"Emma still wakes up at four in the morning sometimes," Vincent said softly. "She doesn't scream anymore, but she looks for you. And Noah... Noah told Marco yesterday that when he grows up, he wants to learn how to fly like Miss Hannah."

A rare, beautiful smile touched the corners of Hannah’s lips. "I told him it was just physics and leverage."

"Stay," Vincent said. The word was simple, but it carried the weight of a man who had never begged for anything in his life. "Not as an employee. Not as a hired gun. As part of this family. Emma and Noah need an anchor, Hannah. And so do I."

Hannah looked out at the ocean, watching the twins chase the retreating surf. For seven years, her life had been hotels, fake passports, silenced pistols, and bleeding strangers in alleyways. She had believed that her soul was too scorched to ever grow anything green again.

Then Emma looked up from the sand, saw Hannah on the deck, and began waving both arms frantically.

"Miss Hannah!" Emma’s small voice carried over the sound of the waves. "Look! I found a yellow stone! Just like the sun!"

Hannah looked at the key in Vincent’s hand, then up into the dark eyes of the man who ruled a city, but who had stood in the rain to protect her back.

She reached out, picked up the bronze key, and dropped her duffel bag onto the wooden deck.

"Pale blue," Hannah said.

Vincent blinked. "What?"

"The nursery," Hannah said, leaning against the railing beside him, her shoulder brushing his. "You promised Emma we'd paint it pale blue. We start on Monday."

May you like

Vincent smiled—a genuine, unshadowed smile that hadn't touched his face in nearly a year.

"Monday it is," Vincent said, turning back toward the ocean, where his children were laughing in the sun, safe on the shores of a world they would rebuild together.
