Chapter 9 - The Fall

“You ruined me,” Ryan whispered. He dropped to his knees, heedless of the broken glass beneath him. His hands hovered in the air, trembling violently. “Claire... please. Please don't do this. Richard... Richard, you have millions! Just pay the hotel! We can sort this out later! I love Vanessa! I love her!”

Richard Sterling looked down at the man kneeling on the floor with an expression of pure, unadulterated disgust.

“You dragged my daughter into a criminal conspiracy,” Richard said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. “You used my family’s name to shield your pathetic, fraudulent existence. You think I’m going to give this resort a dime to link my name to a federal fraud investigation?”

“Daddy...” Vanessa wept, tears streaming down her contoured cheeks. “The guests are outside... the Sterling name... what are people going to say?!”

“People are going to say that my daughter dodged a bullet,” Richard barked. He turned to his private security guard standing by the door. “Call the hotel management. Tell them the Sterling wedding is canceled. Have our luggage removed from the bridal suite immediately. Call the police to escort this fraud off the premises if he attempts to approach my daughter again.”

“No! Vanessa! Vanessa, look at me!” Ryan screamed, crawling forward on his hands and knees.

Vanessa didn't look back. She pulled the diamond ring off her finger, hurled it directly at Ryan’s face, and let her father lead her out of the room through the private side exit. The ring bounced off Ryan’s forehead, leaving a tiny bead of crimson blood near his eyebrow before rolling under the conference table.

Evelyn collapsed back into her chair, sobbing hysterically into her hands. “My son... my poor boy... Claire, how could you be so cruel? How could you destroy his life like this?!”

I walked slowly over to where Ryan knelt among the glass shards. I pulled a single, folded sheet of paper from my pocket and let it drop onto the floor directly in front of him.

He looked down through blurred, bloodshot eyes.

“What’s this?” he choked out.

“That is a summons for a mandatory DNA paternity test and a family court petition for sole legal and physical custody,” I said.

Ryan stared at the document, his lips trembling. “The baby... the baby on the street... she really is mine?”

“Biologically, yes,” I whispered, leaning down so only he could hear my words. “She was conceived the week before you walked out of our bedroom and told me I was barren. But she will never know your face, Ryan. She will never hear your voice. I will raise her with the strength, the honesty, and the integrity you were never capable of possessing.”

“Claire... please,” he wept, tears mingling with the blood on his forehead. “Let me see her. Let me have something... please don't take my child...”

“You told me you were marrying a woman who could give you a family,” I said, standing tall and looking down at the broken shell of the man I had once loved. “You had one. And you threw it away for an illusion.”

Two uniformed San Diego County Sheriff deputies stepped through the open doorway, accompanied by the hotel’s head of security and an agent carrying an Apex Bank compliance badge.

“Ryan Vance?” the deputy asked.

Ryan didn't answer. He just stared at the floor, sobbing silently into his hands as the handcuffs clicked shut around his wrists.
