Chapter 4 - The Boutique Encounter

Two days later, the air was warm, smelling of coastal jasmine and salt. I carried Lily against my chest in a soft linen wrap, her weight a comforting, anchor-like pressure against my ribs. I had stepped out to pick up a specialized formula prescribed by her pediatrician, cutting through the high-end shopping district of La Jolla.

I didn't expect to see them.

Stepping out of an exclusive bridal boutique called *L'Ami Couture* was Ryan, wearing an Italian linen shirt, accompanied by a tall, striking blonde in an ivory silk slip dress. Vanessa Sterling. Behind them walked Ryan’s mother, Evelyn, holding bags bursting with tissue paper.

I froze for a fraction of a second, instinctively adjusting the linen wrap to shield Lily’s face from the midday glare.

Before I could turn toward the crosswalk, Evelyn’s voice cut through the street noise like a rusty blade.

“Claire?”

Ryan turned. When his eyes locked onto mine, a flicker of panic darted across his features—instinctive, guilty—before melting into an expression of smug, defensive condescension. He stepped forward, lightly resting a hand on Vanessa’s waist in a show of total ownership.

“Claire,” Ryan said, his voice carrying that familiar, performative baritone he used to charm clients. “What a surprise. I didn't think you frequented this part of town anymore.”

Vanessa looked at me, her eyes sweeping over my flat loafers, my dark jeans, and the fabric wrapped across my chest. “Ryan, darling? Who is this?”

“This is Claire,” Ryan said smoothly, though a vein in his temple twitched. “My ex-wife.”

Vanessa’s polite smile tightened into something sharp, victorious, and undeniably cruel. She stepped closer, offering a limp, manicured hand that glittered with a four-carat emerald-cut diamond. “Oh! Claire. Ryan has told me so much about you. Truly. I’m Vanessa. I want to thank you, honestly. If you two hadn't parted ways, Ryan and I never would have found our destiny.”

“Destiny is a funny thing, Vanessa,” I said evenly, ignoring her outstretched hand.

Evelyn scoffed, crossing her arms over her chest. “Still as bitter and ill-mannered as ever, I see. Claire, you shouldn't be wandering around Ryan’s neighborhood. It looks desperate. When Ryan sent you that invitation, it was an act of Christian charity. To show there are no hard feelings.”

“Charity?” I looked directly at Ryan. His eyes dropped to the sling across my chest.

“What do you have in there, Claire?” Ryan asked, a nervous laugh bubbling up from his throat. “Did you finally adopt a rescue dog to fill the void?”

He reached out toward the fabric.

I stepped back violently. “Do not touch me, Ryan.”

Lily let out a tiny, soft whimper from beneath the wrap, squirming against my collarbone.

Ryan froze. His mother gasped.

“A baby?” Evelyn stepped forward, her eyes wide with shock. “You... you bought an infant?”

“I didn't buy anything, Evelyn,” I said coldly. “Unlike your son, I don't purchase things with stolen resources.”

Ryan’s face tightened. “What the hell is that supposed to mean?”

“Ryan,” Vanessa interrupted, her voice petulant, pulling on his arm. “Why are we wasting our time standing on the sidewalk talking to her? We have the cake tasting at the Grand Del Mar in thirty minutes. Harbor Bridge’s concierge set up the executive private suite for us, remember? Let’s just go.”

*Harbor Bridge’s concierge.*

The sheer audacity was breathtaking. He had told this girl that Harbor Bridge was an empire, that he was its king, and that the universe bowed to his wallet.

“Yes, Ryan,” I whispered, stepping close enough that only he could hear the ice beneath my breath. “Don't let me keep you from the Grand Del Mar. Enjoy every single bite of that cake. Eat until you’re full. Because I assure you... the bill is coming.”

Ryan sneered, leaning down slightly. “You still don't get it, do you, Claire? You lost. Look at me. I have the Sterling family, I have a real firm, I have an actual future. You’re holding somebody else’s bastard on a street corner. Don't flatter yourself by thinking you can ever touch me again.”

He turned, took Vanessa’s hand, and walked away toward his leased Mercedes. Evelyn lingered for a single second, sneering at me before strutting after them.

Beneath the wrap, Lily drifted back to sleep, warm against my heartbeat.

I pulled my phone from my pocket and dialed Rachel.

“It’s Claire,” I said. “Execute Phase Two.”
