Chapter 3 - Eleanor’s Poison

"Get your hands off him!" Eleanor shrieked, lunging forward as Detective Miller pulled Richard’s arms roughly behind his back, securing the steel cuffs around his wrists with a sharp, dual click. "Do you have any idea the litigation you are inviting upon your department? My family built this city! We funded the mayor’s re-election campaign!"
"Mrs. Whitmore," Detective Miller said calmly, stepping between her and her son. "Your family's campaign contributions don't buy an exemption from felony domestic abuse, aggravated assault, and grand larceny by extortion. Step back immediately, or you will be arrested for obstruction of justice."
"Assault?" Richard choked, his voice swinging wildly between rage and pathetic desperation. "Look at me! She provoked me! She struck me first! I was defending myself!"
Victoria let out a short, mocking laugh that cut through Richard’s hysterical protests like a straight razor.
"Defending yourself?" she asked, gesturing toward the body-worn camera of the lead officer, which was actively recording the scene. "Claire weighs one hundred and fifteen pounds, Richard. You weigh two hundred and ten. There are visible finger-shaped contusions around her throat, a deep laceration on her shoulder where you threw her against an oak bureau, and the entire master bathroom door is splintered down the center from your boots."
She pulled an iPad from her leather portfolio and tapped the screen once.
The master bedroom filled with the unmistakable, crystal-clear audio captured by my bouquet recorder less than twenty minutes prior. Richard's voice echoed through the high ceilings:
*“You think you can embarrass me? Once that marriage certificate hits the registry, your signature doesn't mean shit. You’ll sign the liquidation papers tonight, or I swear to God, Claire, I’ll throw you off this balcony and tell the press you were drunk and slipped.”*
Eleanor’s mouth opened, then snapped shut like a landed fish. Her gaze darted frantically around the room, taking in the four stone-faced tactical officers, the forensic evidence technician who was already photographing the splintered bathroom door, and the unblinking red lens of the camera recording her every reaction.
"That's... that's taken out of context," Eleanor stammered, her voice suddenly losing its imperious register. "He was upset. Couples quarrel on their wedding nights! The stress of the event—"
"Save it for the bail hearing, Eleanor," I said, stepping forward.
My voice was quiet, but it commanded the entire room. Eleanor turned her gaze toward me, her eyes burning with pure, unadulterated hatred.
"You ungrateful little gutter rat," she hissed, abandoning all pretenses of high-society grace. "We gave you a name! We gave you entry into rooms your pedestrian bloodline could never have dreamed of entering! You should have been on your knees thanking my son for looking at you!"
"Your name is an empty shell, Eleanor," I said, looking her directly in the eye without blinking. "Your son’s accounts are overdrawn by twelve million dollars. The mortgage on this mansion is three months delinquent. The private equity lenders in New York have already issued default notices against your North Wharf development. You didn't invite me into your family out of charity. You invited me in because you needed a hostage to pay your debts."
Richard’s head snapped toward his mother, his face contorted in disbelief. "How does she know about the New York notices? Eleanor, how does she know that?"
"Shut up, Richard!" Eleanor screamed, losing control entirely. "Shut your mouth!"
"She knows," Victoria said smoothly, slipping the iPad back into her briefcase, "because she’s Claire Bennett, former Senior Forensic Auditor for the FTC. Did you really think she spent six years looking at corporate ledgers and wouldn't run a deep-scan audit on the man who was asking for her grandmother’s trust? You walked right into a federal meat grinder, Mr. Whitmore."
Detective Miller gripped Richard by the bicep, turning him toward the bedroom door. "Richard Whitmore, you are under arrest for domestic violence, aggravated assault, criminal coercion, and terroristic threats. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law..."
As they marched him toward the stairs, Richard turned back over his shoulder, his eyes wide and bulging with a mixture of terror and unhinged fury.
"You won't get away with this, Claire!" he shouted, his voice echoing down the cavernous staircase. "My lawyers will dismantle you by morning! You'll never see a dime of this estate! I’ll burn this whole city down before I let you ruin me!"
May you like
"You've already burned it down, Richard," I said softly to the empty hallway. "You're just standing in the ashes."
