Chapter 20 - The Final Keystroke

Eleanor smirked, leaning against the marble mantelpiece, swirling her scotch. "Do as he says, Claire. You’ve lost. Richard lost, you lost, and the Bennett name is finally getting what it deserves. Don't be a martyr for a dead father."

I looked at the cold silver revolver on the desk. I looked at Raymond Vance, who stood by the door, his hand resting on the hilt of a combat knife. There was no escape through physical force.

Julianna’s words echoed in my mind like a rallying cry: *Sterling thinks he’s cracking open a treasure chest. In reality, he’s holding a live grenade.*

I took a deep, steadying breath. I stepped forward to the ebony desk.

"Untie my hands," I said coldly.

Sterling nodded to Raymond, who stepped forward and severed the heavy plastic flex-cuffs with a flick of his blade.

My wrists were raw and bruised, the skin chafed red from the restraints. I rubbed them slowly, looking Conrad Sterling directly in his arrogant, ice-blue eyes.

"My father built something you will never understand, Sterling," I whispered. "You think everything can be bought, coerced, or stolen."

"Capital is the only absolute truth in this world, Mrs. Bennett," Sterling replied with a dry, humorless smile. "Now. The scanner."

I raised my right hand. I positioned my thumb over the glowing blue optical sensor of the terminal.

"Wait!" Eleanor suddenly shrieked from the fireplace, her glass shattering on the hardwood floor. Her face had turned ashen white. "Conrad, look at the screen's sub-routine protocol! That’s not a decryption handshake! That’s an outbound mirror script!"

Sterling’s eyes flicked to the monitor. Lines of code were already cascading down the display in bright crimson text:

**BIOMETRIC HANDSHAKE CONFIRMED.**

**AUTHORITY OVERRIDE: CLAIRE BENNETT.**

**INITIATING FULL BROADCAST TO GLOBAL REPOSITORIES...**

**TARGET: DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE / INTERPOL / FINANCIAL CRIMES ENFORCEMENT NETWORK.**

"What did you do?!" Sterling roared, lunging across the desk to grab the silver revolver.

At that exact second, the massive, floor-to-ceiling leaded-glass windows behind Sterling exploded inward with a concussive shatter of glass, stone, and smoke.

Concussion grenades erupted across the library, blinding the room in flashing white fire. Heavily armed assault operators in dark blue tactical gear, bearing the bold yellow lettering of the FBI HOSTAGE RESCUE TEAM, rappelled through the shattered frames, their weapons raised.

"FEDERAL AGENTS! NOBODY MOVE! WEAPONS ON THE GROUND!"

Raymond Vance drew his sidearm, but three deafening shots echoed through the smoke, dropping him instantly to the rug. Eleanor shrieked in terror, diving beneath a mahogany side table as glass rained down around her.

Sterling scrambled backwards, clutching the revolver, but an FBI operator kicked the weapon violently from his grasp, slamming the billionaire face-first into his own mahogany desk, twisting his arms behind his back in titanium cuffs.

Through the drifting cordite smoke and rain blowing in through the shattered windows, a figure stepped through the ruined terrace doors, wearing a soaked trench coat and holding a smoking service sidearm.

It was Victoria. Beside her stood the Deputy Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"Victoria..." I breathed, coughing through the acrid smoke.

"Did you really think I didn't have a tracker in that funicular switch, Claire?" Victoria said, a fierce, bloodied smile cutting across her face. "The second they breached the estate, we had the federal warrants activated."

The tactical commander stepped forward, pinning an ear-piece to his head. "Ma'am, we have secured the premises. Sterling and Bennett are in custody. But... you need to see this."

The commander turned a tactical tablet toward Victoria and me.

On the screen was a live security feed from Red Rock Correctional Facility—specifically, the administrative segregation unit where Richard Bennett had been locked in an eight-by-ten concrete cell twenty-three hours a day.

The cell was wide open. The two guards assigned to his door were lying unconscious in the corridor.

Scrawled across the concrete wall in dark red paint was a single, terrifying sentence:

May you like

*I AM COMING HOME, CLAIRE.*

Before anyone could speak, the power across the entire estate abruptly died, plunging the shattered citadel into pitch-black darkness.
