Chapter 11 - Perfect Pitch

Spring arrived early along the Mississippi. The heavy rains eased, giving way to warm sunlight, green moss, and the sweet perfume of blooming magnolias.
In the grand music room of the river estate, the tall glass windows were thrown wide open, allowing the warm river breeze to rustle the velvet curtains.
The Bösendorfer sat in the center of the room, its mahogany casing glowing warmly in the afternoon sun.
August sat on the leather bench, wearing a simple linen shirt, his broad shoulders relaxed, his skin healthy and tan. Beside him sat Marin, her hands resting comfortably over his on the piano keys.
Together, they played a duet—a soaring, beautiful composition in C-major, filled with complex harmonics, rich bass notes, and a steady, triumphant tempo that resonated through the entire house.
There were no weapons in the room. There were no guards standing in the hallway. The fortress had finally become a home.
In the city, the name August Rail still carried respect, but it was no longer spoken in terrified whispers. He had established the Dela Callaway Foundation for Music and Healing, funding arts programs and medical care for victims of trauma across the city. The docks were quiet, trade was fair, and the shadow of violence had lifted from the riverfront.
When the final chord of the piece died away, lingering softly in the warm spring air, August turned to Marin.
He reached out, his hand gently tucking a strand of dark hair behind her ear. He placed his hand against his own chest, taking her palm and holding it over his collarbone.
"How does it sound?" he asked softly.
Marin closed her eyes, letting her fingertips sense the vibration beneath his skin. The internal pacemaker was still there, a tiny, silent guardian, but the heart beneath it was calm, deep, and steady—a rhythm built on truth, forgiveness, and unconditional love.

"It sounds perfect, August," Marin smiled, leaning up to kiss his cheek. "It sounds like home."
She turned back to the piano, lifted her hands, and together, they struck the next chord, letting the beautiful, flawless pitch echo far out across the quiet, flowing waters of the river.
