Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

The library became a tomb.

The federal agents had led Adrien away through the service exit, leaving Rachel Mercer, Daniel Vance, Isabella, and Lorenzo standing in the wreckage of a ninety-million-dollar betrayal.

Lorenzo sank slowly into his leather desk chair, his hands trembling as he stared at the portfolio still open on the mahogany wood. "Adrien," he murmured, the betrayal cutting deeper than any gunshot wound. "My own blood. He was selling me out to the feds."

"He wasn't just selling you out, Lorenzo. He was replacing you," Isabella said, her voice dropping into a steady, clinical cadence. "And you made it easy for him. You were too busy running around with Camille Russo to notice that your cousin was putting a noose around your neck."

Lorenzo looked up at her, his hazel eyes wide with a mixture of shock and desperate pleading. "Bella... I'm sorry about Camille. It meant nothing. It was just a distraction, a stupid mistake—"

"Stop," Isabella said, holding up a single hand. "Do not insult my intelligence by calling it a mistake. A mistake is forgetting to buy milk. Sleeping with a CPA planted by your treasonous cousin while your pregnant wife runs your foundation is a choice. You chose her. You chose your ego. And you nearly destroyed everything we built."

Daniel Vance cleared his throat, shifting uncomfortably near the door. "Boss... Mrs. Bellini... the IRS audit is going to trigger a comprehensive review of foundation assets. If the government seizes the primary accounts, the logistics companies will be frozen within forty-eight hours."

"The accounts won't be seized," Isabella said without looking at Daniel. "Rachel has already filed an emergency injunction establishing the Bellini Family Foundation as an independent, victim-cleared entity under my sole receivership. The federal prosecutor has agreed to drop criminal enterprise charges against the primary logistics wing, provided Lorenzo steps down immediately as managing director and surrenders all voting shares to the trust."

Lorenzo stared at her in sheer disbelief. "Surrender my shares? Bella, that’s my company. That’s my father's legacy."

"Your father built this family on strength and loyalty, Lorenzo," Isabella said, stepping closer to the desk and looking down at him with an expression of profound, chilling pity. "You traded both for a cashmere scarf and a woman who was selling your secrets to the highest bidder."

"Where is Camille?" Lorenzo asked, a sudden panic seizing his voice. "Where did she go?"

"She’s in the parlor," Isabella replied calmly. "Rachel’s team interviewed her twenty minutes ago. She provided the encrypted digital keys to Adrien’s offshore servers in exchange for full immunity and witness relocation for her and her daughter. She’s gone, Lorenzo. She left your ring on the coffee table."

Lorenzo buried his face in his hands, his broad shoulders shaking. The untouchable boss of Philadelphia, the man who made mayors tremble and unions fall in line, was dismantled in the span of twenty minutes by the woman he had underestimated.

"What happens to us, Bella?" he whispered through his fingers.

Isabella turned toward the heavy oak doors, her green dress rustling softly against the Persian rug. She stopped at the threshold, resting her hand once more against the swell of her belly, where Gabriel gave a sharp, reassuring kick.

"Tomorrow morning, my divorce lawyers will file for full custody, complete asset division, and a permanent restraining order," Isabella said, her voice echoing in the silent room. "You will pack your things, Lorenzo. You will leave this estate. And when our son is born, you will see him only under supervision."

She looked back at him one last time.

"You wanted an empire, Lorenzo. Now you have it all to yourself."
