Chapter 5 - The Infrastructure Collapses

Before Adrian could speak, the double doors of the estate burst open.

Dante Moretti walked into the house, flanked by four federal marshals and two city building inspectors. He was six-foot-three, wearing a custom charcoal overcoat, his presence instantly suffocating the grand foyer.

"Adrian Vale?" Dante’s voice was casual, devoid of warmth.

"Who authorized you to enter my home?!" Adrian roared, though his voice cracked with panic. "Security! Get in here!"

No security came.

Matteo’s men had already disarmed Adrian’s private security detail at the gate ten minutes ago.

Dante unfolded a thick document stamped with golden city seals. "I’m Dante Moretti, chairman of Moretti Infrastructure. As the primary contractor and concrete supplier for your crown jewel—the Vale Pinnacle Tower in Hudson Yards—I am officially declaring structural insolvency."

Adrian choked on his breath. "That tower is ninety percent complete! It’s worth six hundred million!"

"It was," Dante replied calmly. "Until our structural tests revealed low-grade rebar and falsified safety permits filed by your brother Marcus to cut thirty million in overhead."

Marcus turned translucent. "How... how did you get those logs?"

"My younger brother Leo lives inside your server farm," Dante said, not even looking at Marcus. "The city has revoked your occupancy permit. Stop-work orders are issued. The union workers have walked off the site. The banks holding the construction loans have accelerated repayment. Effective five minutes ago, the project is dead."

Eleanor rose from her chair, trembling with rage. "You thugs! You cannot do this to the Vale family! We have dined with governors! My late husband built this state!"

"Your late husband was a loan shark who bought a country club membership," Matteo’s voice rumbled from the doorway as he stepped inside.

Matteo was broad as an oak, his dark eyes fixed entirely on Adrian. He carried a small leather folder under his arm.

"Every shipment of imported marble, structural glass, and luxury finishes for your family’s developments sits on my docks in Elizabeth, New Jersey," Matteo said. "Port authorities have impounded all Vale-consigned cargo for customs fraud. Nothing leaves. Nothing enters. You are choking on your own supply chain, Adrian."

Adrian backed away, bumping into the dining table, knocking over crystal glasses that shattered on the floor.

He looked at me, sitting serenely in my chair, sipping a glass of water.

"Anna... please," he stammered, sweat breaking out across his forehead. "You’re my wife. We can talk about this. Last night... it was a misunderstanding. Vanessa pushed me into it!"
