Chapter 10 - A Fate Worse Than Death

The federal agents moved in, hoisting Adrian, Marcus, and Vanessa to their feet.

Adrian fought against the cuffs, screaming my name as they dragged him across the ballroom floor. "Anna! Anna, please! You can't leave me like this! You're my wife!"

I didn't answer. I turned my back on him.

Luca stepped forward, nodding to the lead marshal. "Ensure they are placed in separate holding cells at the Metropolitan Correctional Center. My associates at the facility will ensure they are... appropriately monitored."

The doors of the grand ballroom closed behind them, cutting off Adrian’s desperate screams.

Eleanor was escorted out last, weeping in the arms of a court-appointed bailiff, stripped of her jewels, her name, and her sanity.

The ballroom was quiet again.

Dante walked over to the ceiling beam, reached up with a pocket knife, and sliced down the remaining nylon cord that had bound my wrists. He tossed the frayed rope into the fireplace and set it alight.

Matteo came beside me, draping a warm, heavy cashmere coat over my bruised shoulders. "It's done, little sister."

"Not entirely," Marco noted, closing his laptop with a sharp click. "The Vale liquidation will take six months. By the time the receivers finish, their entire net worth will be zero. They won't even be able to afford public defenders."

Leo smiled from the doorway. "And Adrian’s prison sentence? Minimum twenty-five years without parole. Vanessa gets fifteen. Marcus gets twelve."

I looked around the grand ballroom one last time. The gold leaf on the walls, the chandeliers, the polished mirrors—all of it had seemed so terrifying when I was tied to that beam.

Now, it was just an empty, hollow room in a house that belonged to my family.

Luca extended his arm to me.

"Time to go home, Anna."

I placed my hand on Luca’s arm, flanked by Matteo, Dante, Leo, and Marco.

Together, the six of us walked out of the Vale estate, down the grand marble staircase, and into the blinding midday sun.

Behind us, the gates of the estate swung shut, locking away the ghosts of a family that had dared to make a Moretti bleed.
