Chapter 7 - The Arrest

The storm that had been brewing over the city all afternoon broke into a driving, icy rain just as four patrol cruisers and two unmarked tactical SUVs pulled into the circular driveway of Harold Miller’s six-thousand-square-foot colonial manor.

Thanks to the video Evelyn had provided, ADA Novak had upgraded the charges. Detective Hayes was not arriving to conduct an interview. He was executing a high-risk felony takedown.

Michael watched the real-time operational dispatch feed via a secure terminal provided by Julian’s legal team. I watched with him from my hospital bed, clutching his hand so tightly his knuckles turned white.

On the front lawn of the Miller estate, a local news van was already parked, tipped off by Harold’s own PR firm in hopes of capturing footage of Harold playing the grieving, injured victim.

Instead, the news cameras captured something entirely different.

The front door was breached with a hydraulic ram after Harold refused to open it.

Within ninety seconds, Harold Miller was dragged out onto his front porch in front of the flashing red and blue lights. He was wearing his monogrammed silk bathrobe, screaming profanities, his face flushed purple with rage.

"Do you know who I am?" Harold roared at the arresting officers, his voice carrying clearly over the news camera microphones. "I am a personal friend of the Police Commissioner! Call Richard Vance! You have no right to enter my home!"

"Harold Miller," Detective Hayes's voice echoed through the cold night air, reading from a laminated card. "You are under arrest for accessory to attempted murder, evidence tampering, filing a false felony report, and grand larceny. You have the right to remain silent."

Seconds later, Linda was led out in handcuffs, weeping uncontrollably, hiding her face behind a cashmere scarf.

And then came Erica.

Erica did not look like the composed, elegant socialite she pretended to be on social media. She was thrashing against the grip of two female officers, screaming like a wounded animal. Her hair was disheveled, her makeup smeared across her cheeks.

"Get off me!" Erica shrieked, kicking at the cruiser door as they forced her into the back seat. "Sarah did this! That ungrateful bitch set me up! She’s trying to steal my money! It’s my money! Dad promised it to me!"

The news reporter on the scene held her microphone up, her eyes wide with shock as the broadcast went live across the tri-state area:

*"We are witnessing the stunning arrest of prominent businessman Harold Miller and his daughter Erica Miller. Sources now confirm that the alleged assault reported earlier today was entirely fabricated, and the Miller family is now facing charges of attempted murder following a horrific attack on Harold Miller’s pregnant elder daughter..."*

Michael closed the laptop.

He turned to me, his eyes dark with the finality of what had just transpired. "It's done, Sarah. They are in holding cells. Judge Albright denied bail for Erica based on the video evidence. She’s not getting out."

A single tear rolled down my cheek, but for the first time in my life, it was not a tear of pain, or grief, or rejection.

It was the feeling of a prisoner watching the prison walls crumble to dust.

My hand drifted to my stomach. Beneath my palm, deep inside the warmth of my body, I felt a tiny, fluttery sensation—not pain, but life. A defiant, miraculous life that refused to be silenced.
