Chapter 2 - The Heartbeat in the Dark

Richard Vance didn't flinch, but his eyes narrowed as Michael stepped into the room.

"Officer," Richard said smoothly, raising his hands in a placating gesture, "I am the family attorney. I was merely discussing private domestic arrangements with my client's daughter."

"He's not my attorney," I choked out, reaching desperately toward Michael. "He came here to threaten us. He's trying to cover up what they did!"

Michael didn't look at Richard. His entire focus was locked on me. He crossed the room in two long strides, dropping to his knees beside the gurney. His hands, though scraped and trembling, were infinitely gentle as he cupped my tear-stained face. "I'm right here," he whispered, his voice thick with raw emotion. "I’m right here, Sarah. The doctor is here."

Dr. Chen, an OB-GYN with sharp, no-nonsense eyes, stepped past the police officers. "Everyone who isn't medical personnel or the patient's spouse needs to clear this cubicle immediately. Now."

"Officer," Richard attempted again, reaching for his briefcase. "I must advise you that a counter-complaint is currently being logged at the Third Precinct regarding an aggravated assault committed by this man—"

"Sir," the older of the two officers said, placing a firm, gloved hand on Richard’s shoulder. "Step outside into the hallway. If you interfere with emergency medical care, I will arrest you for obstruction right here on the linoleum."

Richard held Michael’s gaze for a second—a cold, calculated warning—before picking up his gloves and stepping out into the corridor. The door swung shut, muffling the chaotic sounds of the emergency department.

"Sarah," Dr. Chen said, her voice dropping into a calm, focused cadence. "We need to look at the baby right now. You’re having active spotting, and we need to locate the source of the bleeding."

The cold conductivity gel hit my bruised, swollen lower abdomen, making me hiss in pain. A dark, purple contusion was already blooming across my skin where the steel toe of Erica's boot had struck me. Michael gripped my left hand with both of his, bowing his head against the mattress, his lips moving in silent, desperate prayer.

Dr. Chen pressed the transducer down. The screen lit up in grainy shades of black, gray, and static.

For thirty agonizing seconds, there was no sound except the mechanical hum of the machine. The silence was suffocating. In my mind, I was back on the dining room rug, smelling the scorched mint tea on my denim jeans, feeling the sickening thud of Erica’s foot slamming into my flesh. *I bet I can keep your 12-week pregnancy quiet.* Her whispered words echoed like a death sentence.

"There's a subchorionic hematoma," Dr. Chen muttered, adjusting the frequency dials. "A significant collection of blood between the uterine wall and the gestational sac. That’s where your bleeding is coming from."

"Is the baby..." My voice broke. I couldn't finish the sentence.

Dr. Chen adjusted the probe angle, leaning closer to the monitor. Suddenly, the speaker crackled to life.

*Thump-thump. Thump-thump. Thump-thump.*

Fast. Resilient. Rhythmic.

A tiny, flickering beacon of light pulsed in the center of the dark sac on the screen.

Michael let out a ragged, broken gasp, his forehead resting against my arm as heavy tears finally spilled from his eyes. "It's there," he sobbed quietly. "It's there, Sarah. Hear that? Our baby is fighting."

"The gestational sac is intact," Dr. Chen said, though her face remained guarded. "The fetal heart rate is one hundred and forty-eight. That is a miracle considering the blunt-force trauma to your abdominal wall. But I need to be entirely transparent with you: this pregnancy is critically compromised. The hematoma covers nearly thirty percent of the placental border. Any elevation in blood pressure, any physical exertion, or any further trauma will cause a complete abruption."

"What do we do?" Michael asked, lifting his head, his eyes burning with fierce determination.

"Strict pelvic rest," Dr. Chen answered. "Complete bed rest for the next three weeks. Progesterone therapy. And zero stress. If she experiences another shock like this tonight, she will lose this child."

The door opened slightly, and the older police officer poked his head in. "Mr. and Mrs. Miller? The attorney is out here demanding we take a statement regarding the alleged assault at the residence. Detectives from Special Victims are en route. We need to know what you want to do."

Michael stood up. The vulnerability that had broken across his face moments ago hardened instantly into cold, unyielding titanium.

"My wife is not giving a statement tonight," Michael said, stepping toward the officer. "Her life and our child's life are in critical danger. But I will give mine. And officer? Don't let Richard Vance leave the building. Because he just attempted to tamper with a witness in a felony assault case."
