Chapter 11 - The Four Words

One year after our wedding night, Nathan and I returned to the Grand Regent Hotel.

We hadn't returned out of sentimentality, but because Nathan’s company was hosting its annual corporate charity gala in the main ballroom. The hotel had undergone an extensive interior renovation over the winter, and the grand hall had been transformed completely.

The white Carrara marble floor where I had fallen was gone, replaced by rich, dark teak hardwood that reflected the soft golden light from the crystal chandeliers above.

I stood near the tall velvet drapes near the entrance—the exact spot where my father had cornered me twelve months earlier—wearing a stunning midnight-blue evening gown. I held a glass of sparkling water, watching the hundreds of guests laughing and talking comfortably.

Nathan walked over from a conversation with his board of directors, sliding his arm around my waist and leaning down to kiss my temple.

"Thinking about last year?" he asked softly.

"A little," I admitted, turning to face him. "It’s strange being back here. But it doesn't hurt anymore."

"Good," Nathan said, his thumb gently caressing my hip. "It shouldn't. You took back every inch of this room."

He looked at me, a soft, inquisitive smile playing on his lips. "You know... in all the chaos of that night, the arrests, the audits, the trials... I never asked you something."

"What's that?" I asked, looking up into his dark, warm eyes.

"When you were lying on the floor, in so much pain, surrounded by all those people... why did you whisper those specific four words to me?" Nathan asked gently. "Why 'Call Daniel. Use everything'?"

I looked down at the dark hardwood floor beneath our feet, then looked back up at the man who had loved me enough to burn down a toxic empire to set me free.

"Because for my entire life, my parents made me believe that love was about endurance," I said, my voice rich with quiet certainty. "They made me believe that being a daughter meant accepting abuse, staying quiet, and letting them consume every piece of my life."

I reached up and touched his face, feeling the familiar, comforting warmth of his skin.

"But when you dropped to your knees beside me, when I looked into your eyes and saw how much you cared about my pain, I realized something," I continued. "Love isn't endurance. Love is protection. Love is justice. And I knew that if I gave you the permission to act, you would end it forever."

Nathan smiled, pulling me close as the band began to play a soft, romantic waltz in the center of the room.

"I will always protect you, Emma," he whispered into my hair. "Always."

We walked out onto the hardwood floor together, stepping into the golden light, leaving the darkness of the past far behind us where it belonged.
