Chapter 7 - Vanessa's Betrayal

While Ethan was being processed at the metropolitan detention center, Vanessa Thorne was already sitting in Julian Mercer’s private law office on the forty-second floor, trembling in an oversized trench coat that she had borrowed from a friend.

Her platinum hair was tied back in an unwashed ponytail. Her designer handbag was gone, replaced by a cheap plastic convenience-store bag containing her passport, two flash drives, and a burner phone.

Julian sat across from her, silently turning over an unlit cigar between his fingers.

“I have everything, Mr. Mercer,” Vanessa stammered, sliding the flash drives across the polished desk. “Every email. Every voice memo. Every wire routing number. Ethan made me do it. He told me that his wife was an invalid who couldn't handle legal documents. He promised me that we would move to Europe as soon as the acquisition cleared!”

Julian didn't touch the drives. He looked at her with clinical detachment. “Miss Thorne, you spent two hundred and forty thousand dollars of Caldwell pension funds on Cartier bracelets, Mediterranean cruises, and designer footwear in the last nine months alone. Do you expect Madam Chairwoman to believe you were an unwitting victim?”

“I can testify!” she cried, leaning across the desk, her manicured nails chipped and dirty. “I will take the stand! I will tell the jury that Ethan forged the board resolutions! I will testify that he deliberately tried to cause Elena emotional distress so she would miscarry and wouldn't be able to contest the post-nuptial agreement!”

The room went deathly cold.

Julian’s eyes narrowed into twin points of black fire. “What did you say?”

Vanessa hesitated, realizing she had crossed a line, but her panic overtook her caution. “He... he talked about it last month. When the doctor said Elena had high blood pressure. He told me that if she lost the baby, she would be too depressed to fight him in court. He told me to make sure the gala was as cruel as possible. He wanted to break her spirit publicly so she would sign whatever settlement his lawyers drafted!”

Julian stood up slowly, picking up the two flash drives with a pair of sterile metal tweezers and dropping them into an evidence pouch.

“Miss Thorne,” Julian said, his voice dangerously low. “You will sign a full sworn affidavit detailing every word of what you just stated. You will turn over that burner phone to the United States Attorney’s office within fifteen minutes. If you do this, our legal team will recommend that your sentence be served in a minimum-security facility with eligibility for early parole.”

“And the money?” she whispered. “Can I keep my jewelry? The things he gave me?”

Julian looked at her with pure, unadulterated contempt. “You will leave this building with the clothes currently on your back, Miss Thorne. And you will thank God that Madam Chairwoman is a woman of the law, rather than a woman of your moral caliber.”

Twenty minutes later, Vanessa was led out the service entrance directly into the back of an unmarked federal transport van. The alliance built on vanity and greed had lasted less than twenty-four hours after the money vanished.
