Chapter 6 - Desperate Begging

By four o’clock that afternoon, rain had begun to lash the glass facade of Vance Tower.

I was reviewing the draft press release for the restructuring of Caldwell Technologies when Clara buzzed the internal intercom.

“Madam Chairwoman... Mr. Caldwell is in the ground-floor lobby. He bypassed building reception by sneaking through the basement delivery dock. Security has him detained in the private holding lounge on floor two, but he is causing an enormous scene. He is demanding to see you. He says he will jump in front of traffic if you refuse to speak with him.”

I sighed, setting down my gold fountain pen. “Send him up to the secondary meeting room. Clear the hallway of staff. Bring two executive security officers inside the room with us.”

When Ethan was escorted into the room five minutes later, he bore no resemblance to the polished, sneering executive who had stood under the chandelier at the Grand Meridian the night before.

His tuxedo jacket was gone. His white dress shirt was stained with coffee and grease, the collar frayed, and two buttons missing. His eyes were bloodshot, his stubble thick and uneven, and his hands shook with violent, uncontrollable tremors.

The moment he saw me sitting behind the marble table, he dropped straight to his knees.

“Elena!” he sobbed, crawling forward until the two security guards caught him by his shoulders, hauling him back. “Elena, please! Please, for the love of God, call off the federal agents! They’re waiting outside my parents’ house! The bank took the car! I have seven dollars in my pocket!”

“Stand up, Ethan,” I commanded, my voice ice. “Have some dignity. You look pathetic.”

“I don’t care about dignity!” he wept, tears carving pale tracks through the grime on his cheeks. “Elena, I made a mistake! It was Vanessa—she seduced me, she tricked me into setting up those accounts! She whispered in my ear every day that I was brilliant, that I deserved more! I was weak, Elena! I was foolish! But I never stopped loving you!”

“You called me an ugly, pregnant wife,” I reminded him, not a single muscle in my face shifting. “You invited three hundred people to laugh at the woman who saved your family name. You told the world I was dead weight.”

“I was drunk!” he screamed, his voice breaking into a desperate rasp. “The pressure... the promotion... I lost my mind! Elena, look at your stomach! That is our baby girl! Are you going to let her father spend ten years in a federal penitentiary? Are you going to make her visit me through bulletproof glass? Think of the scandal! Think of what people will say!”

“People will say that Catherine Vance’s daughter knows how to clean house,” I replied coldly. “And my daughter will never know you as a father. She will know you as a cautionary tale.”

Ethan lunged again, trying to break the guards’ grip. “You’re a monster! You sat there for three years with billions in your pocket while I worked eighty-hour weeks! You played with me! You treated me like a puppet on a string!”

“I gave you eighty million dollars of capital, Ethan,” I said, standing up slowly, supporting my weight against the table edge. “I gave you a debt-free company. I gave you the best legal team in the country. I gave you a luxury penthouse. I gave you an executive title. And what did you do with it? You embezzled from your own engineers’ pensions to buy luxury trinkets for a secretary and shorted the very company that fed you.”

I walked toward the door, not looking back. “You were not a puppet, Ethan. You were a beggar who was invited to the feast, and you chose to steal the silverware.”

“Elena! Elena!” his screams echoed down the corridor as the security team pinned him to the floor, waiting for the arrival of the federal marshals.
