Chapter 6 - The Handcuffs and the Stretcher

Chaos erupted in the sanctuary.
"Medical team, get in here!" Sterling shouted toward the doors.
Two EMTs, who had been waiting in the vestibule alongside the state troopers, sprinted down the aisle with an emergency gurney and trauma kits. David swept me up into his arms, ignoring the pain in his injured shoulder, and gently laid me onto the stretcher.
"Breathe, Clara. Look at me, look at my eyes," David urged, his face inches from mine, brushing damp strands of hair from my forehead. "I'm not leaving your side. Not for a single second."
"David! David, please!" Eleanor’s voice rose into a desperate, wretched shriek from the chancel floor.
She was on her knees now, clawing at his trousers, the dignified matriarch reduced to a groveling beggar. "David, I am your mother! I gave you life! I built this family! You cannot do this to me! It was Julian—Julian manipulated me! He forced me into those investments!"
Detective Vance, leading four uniformed state troopers, stepped up onto the chancel. He reached down, grasped Eleanor’s wrists, and pulled them behind her back with practiced efficiency.

The cold sound of steel handcuffs locking echoed sharply over the marble.
"Eleanor Whitmore," Detective Vance recited, his voice completely deadpan. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, attempted murder, grand larceny, wire fraud, and falsification of legal records."
"Get your filthy hands off me!" Eleanor snarled, thrashing against the officer’s grip as they hauled her to her feet. "Do you know who I am?! I am an executive board member! I am a Whitmore!"
"Not anymore, Eleanor," David said coldly, never looking back at her as he held my hand on the gurney. "As of eight o’clock this morning, the board of directors convened in an emergency session presided over by Michael Sterling. You were unanimously stripped of all executive titles, your shares were frozen under court order, and you have been terminated for gross criminal misconduct."
"Chloe Whitmore," another officer said, stepping behind David’s sister and pulling her arms back.
"No! Please! David, tell them! I'm your sister!" Chloe sobbed hysterically, her expensive mascara running in black streaks down her cheeks. "David, don't let them take me to jail! Please!"
"You ripped the ring from my wife’s hand while she was in labor, Chloe," David said, his voice utterly devoid of sympathy. "You made your choice. You will answer for accessory to attempted murder and felony assault."
As the officers marched Eleanor and Chloe down the center aisle, the two hundred mourners who had previously sneered at me now shrank back in shame and disgust. The whispering was deafening, but this time, the venom was aimed entirely at the fallen matriarch and her daughter. Eleanor held her chin high, but her eyes were wild, broken, and terrified as flashbulbs from news reporters—alerted by Sterling’s office—began stroking through the cathedral windows.
"Out of the way! Move!" the EMTs shouted, wheeling my gurney toward the side exit where an ambulance waited with flashing lights.

David ran beside me, his hand locked around mine, never letting go as the cold rain lashed against our faces on the cathedral steps.
