Chapter 5 - The Resurrection

A scream ripped from Eleanor’s throat—a raw, inhuman wail of sheer terror and disbelief.

"What?" Chloe shrieked, backing away from the casket as if the polished wood had burst into hellfire. "What did he say?!"

A low rumble of disbelief swept through the assembly. People rose from their seats, murmuring frantically, peering toward the chancel steps.

The projector clicked off. The cathedral lights flared back to full brightness, dazzling our eyes with sudden brilliance.

From the rear of the cathedral, beyond the arched vestibule where the rain was still pounding against the heavy flagstones, the heavy sound of measured footsteps broke through the din.

Step. Step. Step.

The crowd parted like the Red Sea. Whispers died in throats. Women clutched their chests, and men stumbled backward over kneelers in sheer, superstitious terror.

Walking slowly down the center aisle, leaning lightly on an ebony cane with an ornate silver handle, was David Whitmore.

He wore a dark navy wool coat, his arm bound in a supportive sling beneath the fabric, a faint, jagged scar running along his left temple. He looked pale, gaunt from days of hiding and intense medical care, but his eyes blazed with living, unyielding fire.

"David..." I choked out, my voice barely a whisper. The shock slammed into my chest like a tidal wave. My vision swam with stars, and my knees finally betrayed me.

Before I could hit the cold stone, David dropped his cane, lunged forward with astonishing speed, and caught me in his arms.

His warmth was real. The familiar scent of cedarwood, bergamot, and rain enveloped me. His chest heaved against mine, his heartbeat pounding steady and strong against my cheek.

"I’m here, Clara," he whispered into my hair, his voice breaking with raw emotion. "I’m here, my love. It's over. You're safe."

"You're dead..." Eleanor rasped, crawling backward across the chancel carpet, her designer clothes disheveled, her eyes bulging with madness. "The police... the body was burned beyond recognition! The dental records matched!"

Sterling stepped forward, adjusting his glasses. "The driver was an undercover federal agent who successfully executed a controlled extraction. The burnt wreck was a staged asset designed to force your hand and secure an immediate confession under federal surveillance. David was moved to a secure trauma facility under witness protection until we could document your conspiracy in its entirety."

David looked up from me, his jaw clenching as his eyes fell upon his mother. The tenderness he had shown me vanished instantly, replaced by a glacial, pitiless fury.

"You couldn't even wait until the dirt was on my grave, Mother," David said, his voice ringing through the massive hall. "You had to drag my pregnant wife into a public sanctuary, strike my casket, and attempt to strip her of her dignity before my peers."

Chloe stood frozen, trembling, her face ash-white. She looked down at the five-carat diamond ring still clutched in her trembling fist, then looked up at her brother, tears of pure horror spilling down her cheeks.

"David... I... Mom made me do it! She told me you were dead, she told me she had the tests—"

"Shut your mouth, Chloe," David commanded, the authority in his tone so absolute that she snapped her jaw shut instantly.

David extended his right hand. "Give it back."

Chloe’s hands shook so violently she could barely open her fingers. David stepped toward her, plucked the bloody platinum wedding band from her palm, and turned back to me. He took my swollen, bruised left hand, lifted it to his lips, and kissed my bleeding knuckle with infinite tenderness before sliding the ring back onto my finger where it belonged.

"Nobody touches what is mine," David murmured.

Suddenly, a sharp, agonizing cry escaped my lips. A contraction far more violent than the rest tore through me, and a warm rush of fluid broke against the marble floor.

"David..." I gasped, gripping his lapels. "The baby... she's coming. Now."
