Chapter 3 - The Audit

The silence in the ballroom didn't last long; it broke into a chaotic hum of urgent whispers, rustling dresses, and the frantic clicking of smartphone keypads.

Daniel stood rooted to the spot, his face shifting from sickly white to a mottled, dangerous crimson. He looked down at his phone, which had just vibrated sharply in his palm. A red banner alert flashed across his screen: Access Denied. Corporate Credentials Suspended.

"This is impossible," Daniel muttered, his thumb swiping wildly across the glass. "This is an administrative error. Robert, call IT! Tell them to fix this!"

"IT didn't lock you out, Daniel," Eleanor Vance’s voice echoed across the room.

She walked into the ballroom through the main glass doors, looking impeccably sharp in a dark charcoal pantsuit, carrying a slim leather portfolio under one arm. Two young associates followed behind her, carrying heavy aluminum briefcase containers.

Eleanor didn't glance at the ice sculptures or the champagne towers. She walked straight to Chairman Lang, handed him a single sheet of paper, and then turned her icy blue eyes on Daniel.

"Mr. Mercer," Eleanor said smoothly. "As of eight-forty-two PM, you have been formally relieved of all duties within Vantage Meridian Group. Your appointment as Regional Operations Director is rescinded. Your prior position as Senior Logistics Analyst is terminated for cause."

"For cause?" Daniel yelled, his voice cracking into a high-pitched screech. "What cause? I haven't done anything! I just broke up with my wife!"

"You committed a felony physical assault against the primary shareholder of this corporation in front of two hundred witnesses," Eleanor replied, not even raising her voice. "Furthermore, under Section 12 of your employment contract, any executive conduct that causes severe reputational damage to Vantage Meridian results in immediate termination with full forfeiture of unvested stock options."

Vanessa stepped further away from Daniel, her eyes darting frantically toward the exit. "Daniel... you said you had four hundred thousand dollars in company options vesting tonight..."

Daniel turned to her, his eyes wild. "Vanessa, shut up for a second! Let me handle this!"

"Those options were revoked ninety seconds ago," Eleanor added with a small, terrifying smile. "Along with your corporate credit card, your lease allowance for the BMW M5, and your access to the executive parking structure."

Daniel dropped his phone. It clattered against the floor, the screen cracking straight across the center.

"Claire!" he shouted, lunging forward a step, though Chairman Lang immediately moved his bulk to block him, accompanied by the two large security guards who were now looking at Daniel with dark, predatory expressions. "Claire, look at me! You can't do this! We're married! Everything you have is marital property!"

I looked at him with genuine curiosity. It was incredible how six years of marriage could evaporate in six minutes, leaving behind only the naked, ugly reality of the man I had built my life around.

"We signed a prenuptial agreement, Daniel," I said softly. "You insisted on it, remember? You said you didn't want my 'cheap farm assets' mixed up in your future wealth."

Daniel choked back a sound that was half-sob, half-growl. He had insisted on that prenup six years ago because he was convinced he was going to make millions while I would remain a schoolteacher with a tiny inheritance. That prenup explicitly shielded all pre-marital assets, family trusts, and entity acquisitions from spousal claims.

"And as for Harlow Capital's thirty-eight percent stake," Eleanor continued, pulling a blue-bound legal binder from her associate's briefcase, "we initiated a forensic accounting review of the Regional Operations department three weeks ago, long before tonight's... spectacle."

Daniel froze. The color drained from his face once more, leaving him looking hollow, almost skeletal.

"Forensic audit?" he whispered.

"Mrs. Harlow noticed discrepancies in the regional vendor disbursement ledgers back in August," Eleanor said, glancing at me with a nod of respect. "Specifically, three hundred and forty thousand dollars routed through a shell LLC registered under the name 'V&M Consulting'—a company registered to a residential address in Miami."

I looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa went entirely still. Her lower lip began to tremble.

"V&M," I murmured. "Vanessa and Mercer. You weren't even clever enough to come up with a real fake name, Daniel."

"That... that was consulting!" Daniel stammered, his hands shaking so violently he had to shove them into his tuxedo pockets. "It was legitimate logistical oversight!"

"The State Attorney General's financial crimes unit will determine how legitimate it was when they receive the dossier at nine AM tomorrow," Eleanor said calmly.

"Chairman Lang," I said, turning my back on Daniel completely. "I suggest we clear this room and hold an emergency board meeting in the executive conference room upstairs."

"Immediately, Mrs. Harlow," Lang said, bowing his head again. He turned to the security officers. "Escort Mr. Mercer and Miss Cole off the property immediately. If either of them steps foot on Vantage Meridian property again, have them arrested for trespassing."

"Claire! Claire, please!" Daniel screamed as the two massive guards grabbed him by his upper arms, hauling him backward toward the service doors. "We can talk about this! I love you! I was confused! Vanessa pushed me into this!"

May you like

"Daniel!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice high and panicked as a third security guard grabbed her arm. "You liar! You told me you were running this company!"

Their frantic shouting faded down the long carpeted hallway, cut off sharply as the heavy oak double doors clicked shut.
