Chapter 4 - The Severed Tether

Three days later, I checked out of St. Jude’s Hospital.

I didn't leave alone. Marcus had arranged for private security—two discreet, sharp-eyed men in dark suits—and a black town car driven by Thomas, Daniel’s longtime driver. Thomas wept when he saw Grace, gently pressing a silver rattle into my hand that his wife had bought for her.

"Mr. Daniel would be so proud of you, Mrs. Montgomery," Thomas said as he opened the car door. "He is looking down on both of you."

"Thank you, Thomas," I said, sliding into the back seat and securing Grace’s car seat into the latch.

We drove to the penthouse overlooking the harbor.

The penthouse had been Daniel’s sanctuary. It spanned the entire top two floors of a modern glass high-rise, accessible only by a private elevator that required biometric authentication. Inside, the floors were warm white oak, the floor-to-ceiling windows offered panoramic views of the ocean, and the silence was profound.

The nursery was ready. Daniel and I had finished painting it three weeks before his crash. Soft sage walls, a white crib crafted from sustainable maple, and shelves lined with classic storybooks. On the wall hung a framed photograph of Daniel standing at the helm of his sailboat, laughing into the wind, his hair wild and his eyes full of sunlight.

I laid Grace down in her crib. She stretched her tiny arms, yawned, and nestled into the soft linen.

"Welcome home, my darling," I whispered.

While Grace slept, I poured myself a cup of chamomile tea and sat at Daniel’s old mahogany desk in the corner office. I turned on my laptop and opened the secure client portal Marcus had established.

It was Monday morning.

8:15 AM.

The notifications began rolling in like artillery shells hitting a distant trench.

*System Alert: Vanguard Heritage LLC has dispatched formal Notice of Tenancy Termination to 14 Oakridge Terrace via certified courier and process server.*

*System Alert: Sentinel Shield Philanthropic Auxiliary has terminated lease sponsorship for 'Vee’s Atelier'. Landlord notice issued.*

*System Alert: Board Resolution 44-B executed. Advisory seats 01 and 02 vacated. Corporate honorariums canceled.*

*System Alert: Mercedes-Benz Financial Services notified of corporate fleet termination. Vehicle retrieval scheduled.*

I closed the laptop screen.

For the first time in eight months, the tightness in my chest eased. I didn't feel vindictive; I felt clean. For years, I had allowed myself to be poisoned by their emotional abuse, clinging to the pathetic hope that if I just gave them enough money, enough access, enough patience, they would finally look at me with pride.

They had never loved me. They had loved Daniel’s balance sheet.

And now, the balance sheet was closed to them forever.

I walked back into the nursery, sat down in the rocking chair beside Grace’s crib, picked up a book, and began to read aloud into the warm, safe quiet of our home.
