Chapter 3 - The Cold Shadow of Greed

The sun was high in the sky when Marcus Vance walked into my private recovery suite.

Marcus was fifty-two years old, had silvering temples, and possessed the sharp, predatory eyes of a lawyer who had spent three decades eviscerating corporate raiders. He had been Daniel’s closest confidant long before Sentinel Shield became a multi-billion-dollar entity, and he was the executor of Daniel’s final trust.

Marcus carried a leather briefcase in one hand and a magnificent arrangement of white peonies in the other.

"She has Daniel's chin," Marcus said softly, placing the flowers on the windowsill and looking down at Grace, who was fast asleep in the clear bassinet beside my bed. "And your eyes. She's magnificent, Claire."

"Thank you, Marcus," I said, leaning back against the pillows. I felt physically shattered, but mentally, I had never been more lucid in my life. "Did you bring the papers?"

Marcus pulled a chair up beside the bed and set his briefcase across his knees. He didn't ask how the dinner went. He had seen the security camera footage from the ring doorbell of my parents' house—he knew I had arrived in labor, and he knew I had left alone.

"Everything is drafted, Claire," Marcus said, his tone turning crisp and professional. "I only need your signature to execute the formal revocations. But before you sign, I want to make sure you understand the absolute devastation this will cause your parents and sister."

"Devastation?" I let out a humorless laugh. "Marcus, they watched my water break on their dining room floor and told me to clean it up before driving myself to the hospital. My father went back to eating his steak. Vanessa asked who the 'real father' was."

Marcus’s expression hardened. The professional neutrality vanished, replaced by an icy, lethal focus. "Understood. Let me walk you through the mechanisms."

He opened the leather folio and spread three documents across my tray table.

"First: The residence on Oakridge Terrace. Your parents believe they own that estate outright. They do not. Daniel purchased the outstanding balance of their second mortgage five years ago through a shell holding company, *Vanguard Heritage LLC*, when Richard’s commercial real estate firm went into bankruptcy. Daniel allowed them to live there rent-free under a revocable tenancy-at-will agreement, while he serviced the property taxes, insurance, and maintenance."

"Terminate it," I said without hesitation.

"I will issue an immediate formal notice of termination of the tenancy-at-will," Marcus nodded, checking a box. "They will receive a standard thirty-day notice to vacate, or they will be required to pay the fair market rental value: twelve thousand dollars a month. Given Richard’s remaining assets, they cannot afford two weeks."

"And Vanessa?"

"Vanessa’s boutique in the Arts District," Marcus continued, flipping to the second document. "The commercial lease is held directly under Sentinel Shield’s corporate philanthropic auxiliary. Daniel signed as corporate guarantor, and the monthly lease—fifteen thousand five hundred dollars—is auto-debited from an auxiliary trust account. Furthermore, she receives an executive stipend of eight thousand dollars monthly as an 'honorary fashion consultant' for Sentinel’s executive branding."

"Cut the stipend immediately. Notify the landlord that Sentinel Shield is exercising its contractual right to terminate the corporate lease guarantee due to the death of the primary grantor."

"She will be locked out of the boutique by Monday morning," Marcus noted calmly. "The landlord has three tenants waiting for that prime location."

"And my father's board seats?"

"Richard sits on two advisory boards for Daniel's non-profit cybersecurity initiatives. Each provides an annual honorarium of seventy-five thousand dollars, along with access to corporate fleet vehicles—specifically, the 2024 Mercedes S-Class he currently drives. I have already drafted the board resolutions removing him for breach of fiduciary duties and family conflict of interest. The vehicle’s lease will be terminated, and the repo team will recover the car within forty-eight hours."

I picked up the pen Marcus offered me.

My hand did not shake.

For years, Daniel had carried the weight of my dysfunctional, predatory family on his broad shoulders simply because he loved me. He knew I was terrified of being abandoned, terrified of admitting that my parents only valued me as an instrument of their social survival. He had subsidized their lives to protect my peace of mind.

They had repaid his generosity by spitting on his memory and slandering his newborn daughter before she had even taken her first breath.

I signed the first document. Then the second. Then the third.

"Execute everything on Monday morning at 8:00 AM," I told Marcus, handing back the pen.

May you like

Marcus smiled—a cold, razor-thin smile. "It will be my absolute pleasure, Claire. Sleep now. You and Grace have a life to live."
