Chapter 8 - The Gala Ambush

The following evening was supposed to be the crowning achievement of Daniel’s life: the Annual Bay Area Real Estate Visionary Gala at the Palace of Fine Arts.

Daniel, on bail posted by a desperate bail bondsman who hadn't yet realized Daniel’s properties were frozen, made the catastrophic decision to attend. He thought that if he appeared in black tie, surrounded by his remaining patrons, he could project strength, stave off panic, and find a private lender foolish enough to inject fifty million dollars into his burning ship.

He walked into the grand ballroom with his chin held high, his fractured arm resting in a tailored velvet sling. The whispers parted around him like an uneasy tide. People looked at him with the morbid fascination reserved for condemned men walking toward the scaffold.

He took the stage at 8:30 PM, taking the podium to deliver the keynote address.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Daniel began, flashing the million-dollar smile that had once deceived hundreds of investors, and had once deceived me. “In every great enterprise, there are moments of friction. The media loves a domestic controversy. But true visionaries look past the sensationalism to the balance sheet. Project Bayside will redefine modern urban living on the Pacific coast. Mercer Development is resilient, fully capitalized, and unshakeable.”

The applause was nonexistent. An awkward, suffocating silence gripped the eight hundred guests.

“Is that so, Daniel?”

The voice echoed from the main audio system, amplified cleanly through the house speakers.

The massive four-story projection screen behind Daniel flickered. The corporate promotional video showing digital renderings of luxury penthouses vanished.

In its place appeared a high-resolution scan of the Washoe County Bigamy Indictment filed six hours earlier. Next to it was a side-by-side comparison of two marriage certificates: Daniel Mercer to Claire Holloway, 2021; Daniel Mercer to Vanessa Cole, 2023.

The room erupted into collective gasps. Champagne flutes clinked against tables as guests sat bolt upright.

Daniel whipped around, staring at the screen in pure horror. “Shut it off! Turn off the projector! Sound booth, cut the feed!”

I walked onto the stage from the left wing, dressed in a sweeping emerald silk gown that showed the full, proud curvature of my seven-month pregnancy. I held a cordless microphone in my right hand.

“Good evening, everyone,” I said, my voice echoing smoothly across the cavernous hall. “Daniel Mercer neglected to share the latest financial update with his visionary colleagues. So allow me to provide the quarterly report.”

I pressed the clicker in my hand.

The screen shifted, displaying bank records, transaction flows, and red forensic tracking arrows showing the systematic diversion of eighteen million dollars in investor deposits directly into dummy accounts in Nevis, Delaware, and Evelyn Mercer’s private foundation.

“Project Bayside has no land rights,” I announced to the room, looking at the city council members and major fund managers sitting in the front rows. “The title Daniel sold to your syndicates was forged using an expired land patent belonging to the Holloway Estate. As the sole trustee of that estate, I have officially revoked all development permissions.”

Daniel turned on me, his face purple with rage, his composure completely collapsing in front of every power broker in California.

“You crazy bitch!” he screamed, lunging toward me across the stage, completely forgetting the cameras, the audience, and his injured ribs. “I made you! You were nothing before you met me! I will kill you!”

He never made it across the stage.

Two off-duty police officers serving as gala security intercepted him, tackling him onto the polished stage floor. Daniel writhed, screaming obscenities, his tuxedo jacket tearing at the seams, his forehead bleeding anew where the hospital stitches tore open against the wood.

I looked down at him from five feet away, my voice calm and completely clear over the microphone.

“The audit is concluded, Daniel. You have failed.”
