Chapter 7 - Evelyn's Desperation

By late afternoon, the executive suite was a tomb. The investors on the screens had long disconnected after instructing their general counsels to prepare immediate lawsuits. Todd Bradley had left the building flanked by his personal criminal defense attorney.
Daniel had locked himself in his corner office, refusing to speak to the press that had already begun gathering downstairs.
Only Evelyn remained in the corridor.
She caught me by the private elevator bank on the parking level. Her hair was coming undone, and the ice in her eyes had curdled into frantic, cornered rage.
“You vindictive little bitch,” Evelyn hissed, cornering me against the marble pillar. “You think you’ve won? You’ve destroyed the company your father spent twenty years building! You’ve ruined your own child’s future!”
“My father didn't build Mercer Development,” I replied, stepping back cleanly to maintain my personal space. “My father built a legacy of honest enterprise. Daniel hijacked the name to sell smoke and mirrors. I’m not destroying my father’s work; I’m amputating the parasite that infected it.”
Evelyn lunged forward, her voice dropping into a desperate, furious whisper. “I will make sure you never see a dime. I have half a million dollars in untraceable bearer bonds in a safety deposit box in Zurich. I will take Daniel and we will leave this country before the indictments drop. You will be left with the debts, the lawsuits, and a bastard child no one will ever respect!”
I smiled. It was the first genuine smile I had felt in two days.
I reached into my coat and pulled out a small black audio receiver. The red indicator light was pulsing steadily.
“Do you know what an unshielded wireless microphone looks like, Evelyn?” I asked softly.
From the shadow of the parking garage pillar stepped two men wearing navy blue windbreakers with yellow lettering across the back: **FBI**.
Special Agent Miller walked forward, displaying his credentials. “Mrs. Evelyn Mercer? We have an arrest warrant issued by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California for wire fraud, witness tampering, and conspiracy to commit money laundering.”
Evelyn backed away, her designer purse falling from her hands, scattering lipstick, compact mirrors, and gold credit cards across the oil-stained concrete.
“No... this is a mistake! You don’t understand, I am Evelyn Mercer! My family established the symphony hall! You can’t touch me!”
“Turn around and place your hands behind your back, ma’am,” the second agent said, stepping behind her with cold, mechanical efficiency. The click of the steel handcuffs echoed through the concrete garage.
Evelyn looked back at me over her shoulder, her face twisted in absolute disbelief. “Claire! Tell them! Tell them this is a misunderstanding! I’m the grandmother of your baby!”

“You’re an unindicted co-conspirator, Evelyn,” I said, watching them lead her toward an unmarked black SUV. “And my son will never know your name.”
