Chapter 8 - The Interrogation of the Damned

By 5:00 AM, the Sterling estate had been completely transformed into a federal crime scene.

Mobile forensic vans were parked across the lawn, their portable generators humming in the damp morning air. Dozens of agents in blue windbreakers cataloged evidence, dragging heavy black cases of documents, hard drives, and private server blades out the front doors.

In the basement garage, forensic specialists were dusting the obsidian Maybach. Blue luminol light revealed the horrifying story that the rain had failed to wash away: glowing neon spatters across the rear bumper, the interior lining of the trunk, and the lower edge of the passenger seat.

Liam Sterling sat handcuffed in the back of an armored tactical vehicle parked near the gatehouse. His silk clothes were stained with his own tears and sweat, his golden hair matted against his forehead.

I pulled open the heavy steel door of the vehicle and looked inside.

Liam flinched, shrinking back into the corner of the reinforced bench. "Sarah... please. You have to listen to me. I love Chloe. I swear to God I love her!"

"You kicked her three times in the abdomen, Liam," I said, my voice empty of anger, filled only with an icy, absolute finality. "The surgeon had to open her body from sternum to pelvis to stop the hemorrhage."

"It was my mother!" Liam sobbed, tears cutting clean lines through the grime on his face. "She controls everything! The money, the trusts, the house! She told me if Chloe went to the police about the offshore accounts, the SEC would take everything! She said we’d be ruined! She said Chloe was trying to blackmail us!"

"Chloe was carrying your daughter," I said.

Liam choked on a ragged gasp. He closed his eyes, pressing his forehead against the cold steel mesh of the window. "A daughter?"

"She survived the surgery," I said.

Liam looked up, a desperate, pathetic glimmer of hope entering his bloodshot eyes. "She’s alive? Chloe’s alive? Then... then maybe she won't press charges. I can make this right, Sarah! I’ll give her the estate! I’ll put fifty million dollars in a trust for the baby! We can tell the court it was an accident—"

"Chloe doesn't need your money, Liam," I cut him off. "Because by the time the Justice Department finishes asset forfeiture under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, there won't be a single penny left of the Sterling fortune. Blackwood Manor will be auctioned off on the federal courthouse steps. Your family name will be removed from every wing of every hospital you ever bought."

Liam stared at me, the reality of his total annihilation finally settling into his hollow chest.

"You’re going to a federal penitentiary, Liam," I said softly. "Not a comfortable minimum-security camp with a tennis court. A maximum-security facility where men who beat pregnant women are treated with the exact measure of mercy they showed to their victims."

"No..." he whimpered, shaking his head. "No, please..."

"You took three years of my daughter’s life," I said, reaching out to pull the heavy steel door shut. "You won't see the light of the sun for the next forty."

The door slammed shut with a heavy, final clank.

Through the small bulletproof glass window, I watched Liam collapse sideways onto the bench, his body convulsing in silent, broken sobs.
