Chapter 6 - The Turncoats

We breached the front hall of Blackwood Manor.

The grand foyer was vast, featuring a twin marble staircase that curved gracefully up to an open mezzanine under a soaring four-story dome. Crystal teardrops hung from a dead chandelier above. But the air smelled wrong. It smelled of spilled alcohol, smoke, and the faint, unmistakable metallic tang of blood that someone had tried and failed to erase with lemon-scented floor wax.

"Search the perimeter! Clear the rooms!" Campbell shouted, his tactical team fanning out through the echoing corridors with tactical lights slicing through the gloom.

Halfway up the eastern staircase stood Liam Sterling.

He was wearing an expensive navy wool sweater and slacks, but his eyes were wide and bloodshot, wild with terror. In his right hand, he clutched a leather document case; his left hand gripped the banister so tightly his knuckles were white.

"What do you think you’re doing?" Liam screamed down at the sea of armed agents in his foyer. "Do you know who I am? Who authorized this? Where is Chief Henderson? Henderson!"

Marcus stepped forward into the center of the foyer, the spotlight from the doorway illuminating his tall, unyielding frame. He pulled the red-sealed federal warrant from his coat and held it up.

"Liam Sterling," Marcus called out, his voice reverberating through the marble hall like thunder. "By order of the United States District Court, you are under arrest for attempted murder, assault resulting in severe bodily injury, and federal witness tampering."

"Attempted murder?" Liam laughed hysterically, his voice cracking into a high, panicked falsetto. "Are you insane? My wife is sick! She had an accident! She’s mentally unstable! She ran away from home tonight!"

"We have the camera footage, Liam," I said, stepping out from behind Marcus.

Liam froze.

The laughter died in his throat as his eyes landed on me. His jaw slackened, and he took a half-step backward up the stairs, nearly tripping over the edge of his trousers.

"Sarah?" he whispered. "You... how are you here?"

"I know about the bus stop, Liam," I said, walking slowly toward the base of the staircase. "I know about the kicks to her ribs. I know about you holding her head against the stone step while your mother watched. And I know about the baby."

Liam's face drained of every ounce of color. He shook his head violently, backing up another two steps. "No. No, Chloe fell. She attacked me! Look at my hand! She attacked me, and I was only defending myself!"

"Your signet ring left a laceration on her jawline that matches your family crest down to the millimeter," I said, my voice echoing coldly through the grand hall. "We have the Maybach’s dashcam. We have the perimeter feed from your own front gates. We have your chauffeur’s sworn confession. And ten minutes ago, your offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands were seized under federal anti-terrorism statutes."

"You’re lying," Liam gasped, clutching his chest. "My mother... my mother has lawyers! The Davenport family—"

"Arthur Vance was arrested at his home forty minutes ago," Marcus cut in mercilessly. "Your bank accounts are frozen. Your private jet is grounded at Logan. Your political allies in the municipal police department have been relieved of duty by the state attorney general. You are alone, Liam."

May you like

"Mother!" Liam shrieked toward the top of the stairs, sounding like a terrified ten-year-old boy whose toys had been broken. "Mother! Help me!"
