Chapter 9 - Shattered Dynasty

Evelyn shrieked as she hit the flagstones, kicking wildly with her designer heels, clawing at my face with manicured nails. "Unhand me, you ungrateful wretch! Everything I built was for this family!"

"You built nothing!" I yelled, pinning her shoulders down just as Beatrice had pinned Chloe on the altar. "You fed on us like a parasite!"

From the corner of the cellar, a groan broke through the din. Beatrice was stirring, pushing herself up from the floor, her vision clearing as she took in the scene: Ethan subduing Marcus with the iron fireplace poker, and me wrestling the mother who had stolen her sanity.

Beatrice locked eyes with Evelyn. The terror that had governed Beatrice’s life for four decades vanished, replaced by an ancient, terrible vengeance.

"Mother," Beatrice whispered, rising to her feet like an avenging fury, her hands coated in shattered glass and red wine that looked identical to blood.

Evelyn’s eyes widened with genuine, paralyzing horror. "Beatrice, darling, stay back! Eleanor has lost her mind—"

"You made me hate Julian," Beatrice choked out, stepping closer, her voice rising to a deafening crescendo. "You made me hate a man who tried to protect me! You made me attack a child!"

Beatrice didn't use a weapon. She threw herself onto Evelyn, ripping the family heirlooms from her mother’s throat, screaming out decades of repressed grief and manufactured madness. I pulled myself back, breathing heavily, watching the two architects of our family’s destruction tear each other apart in the shadows of the vault.

Chloe grabbed my hand, pulling me toward Ethan, who was breathing heavily over the unconscious form of Marcus.

"Mom! The phone!" Chloe shouted.

Ethan had managed to retrieve Marcus’s encrypted satellite phone from his tactical belt. He dialed the three digits that would break the estate's isolation, pressing the device into Chloe’s trembling hand.

"Operator," Chloe spoke, her voice clear, resolute, and unbreakable. "My name is Chloe Vance. I am at the Starlight Estate. Send federal marshals, state troopers, and ambulances immediately. My family just tried to commit murder."

As she spoke, the distant chime of the grandfather clock in the main parlor above began to strike five solemn, resounding tones.
