Chapter 4 - The Golden Trap

A heavy, deliberate knock rattled the mahogany doors, sending a jolt of panic through the room. The brass handles jiggled aggressively before the deep voice of Marcus Vance, Evelyn’s longtime private estate manager and head of personal security, sounded through the wood.
"Mrs. Vance, open this door immediately," Marcus commanded, his tone devoid of any professional courtesy. "Doctor Henderson is here to administer a sedative to Chloe. For her own protection, she needs to be transported to the Saint Jude sanitarium."
"A sanitarium?" I whispered in pure horror, looking at Chloe’s blood-streaked, terrified face. If they declared her mentally incompetent before five o'clock, the trust would trigger its incapacity clause. Evelyn would retain every single cent, and Chloe would be erased from the world behind locked asylum doors.
"Get away from that door, Marcus!" I screamed, positioning myself between the entrance and my child. "I’ve called the state police! They’ll be here within minutes!"
A dry, amused chuckle filtered through the wooden panels. It was my mother’s voice, smooth as chilled venom. "Don't bother bluffing, Eleanor. The cell towers on the estate grounds have been jammed since noon, and the perimeter gates are chained shut under the pretext of an armed domestic disturbance. Nobody is coming to save you."
Ethan rushed to his phone, staring at the screen in grim confirmation. "No signal. She’s telling the truth."
"Listen to me carefully, Eleanor," Evelyn continued through the door, her tone terrifyingly rational. "You have always been the weak link in this family. So hopelessly romantic, so blindingly moral. Julian was the same way. He wouldn't bend, he wouldn't compromise, and look where that stubbornness put him. A concrete pillar at ninety miles per hour. If you open this door and have Chloe sign the voluntary conservatorship documents, I will let her live. Resist, and Beatrice will finish what she started on that altar."
Chloe gripped my arm, her knuckles white. "Mom, look at the fireplace," she whispered, pointing toward an ornate stone hearth that backed against the corner wall. "The old chimney flue connects to the servants' passage behind the wine cellar. Julian used to talk about it in his journal."
