Chapter 5 - The Voice across the Ocean

The silver satellite phone sat in the center of the mahogany table, its small digital display flashing as the connection routed through encrypted relays in Panama before bouncing south toward South America.
Marcus sat trembling in his chair, a fresh glass of water untouched beside his hand. Lorenzo sat across from him, entirely still, his arms crossed over his chest.
The line clicked. A deep, familiar voice spoke through the speakerphone—a voice that Lorenzo had not heard in four thousand and fifteen days.
"Marcus?" the voice said in smooth, confident Italian. "Why are you calling on this line? It’s three in the morning here. Is Vance done with the grand jury filings?"
Lorenzo reached out and pressed the button to unlock the microphone.
“Hello, Enzo,” Lorenzo said quiet.
A sudden, suffocating silence fell over the satellite line. The light background static of the ocean connection was the only sound in the room.
"...Lorenzo?" Enzo’s voice returned, the smooth confidence instantly evaporating, replaced by a tense, guarded caution. "How do you have this number?"
“Sophie found the door,” Lorenzo answered simple. “The one behind the law books in the library. She saw Marcus come down with the green folder. She liked the little lion ring.”
Another long pause stretched across the miles.
"I see," Enzo said slowly. The shock in his voice faded rapidly, replaced by a chilling, cynical pragmatism that revealed the man he had truly become. "I suppose it was bound to happen eventually. Eleven years is a long time to keep a secret in a house that large."
“You sold our father for six million dollars,” Lorenzo said, his tone devoid of anger, carrying only a terrifying, hollow weight. “You sat in a room with a federal prosecutor and planned the minute he would die on Michigan Avenue.”
Through the speaker, Lorenzo heard the faint sound of a lighter flicking, followed by a long exhale of smoke.
"Victor was an old fool, Lorenzo," Enzo said coldly. "He was living in the 1970s. He thought he could keep fighting the federal government, the city council, and the rival families with muscle and loyalty. He was going to end his life in a maximum-security prison, and he was going to take the entire family down with him. I saved what was left of our wealth."
“You saved yourself,” Lorenzo corrected. “You left me here to deal with the war you created. You let me believe the Marcones killed him. I spent three years hunting down their captains because of your lie.”
"And you survived, didn't you?" Enzo scoffed. "Look at you. You became the undisputed boss of Chicago. You ran the logistics better than Victor ever could. You built a legitimate empire on the foundation we laid for you. You should be thanking me."
Lorenzo looked at Marcus, who flinched and pulled his eyes away.
“Where are you, Enzo?” Lorenzo asked softly.
"Don't be naive, brother," Enzo chuckled softly. "Do you really think I’m going to give you an address? I’m five thousand miles away. I have full diplomatic protection under my new identity, I have forty million dollars in liquid assets, and I have local security that makes your little Chicago crew look like amateur street guards. You can't touch me down here."
“I don't need to come to Argentina to touch you, Enzo,” Lorenzo said quietly. “You built your new life using our family’s corporate accounts. The ones registered under V&R Holdings in the Caymans.”
The sound of smoking on the other end of the line stopped abruptly.
“I spent the last two hours with Vance,” Lorenzo continued smoothly. “And before Bruno took him out of the room, he gave me the master access keys to the offshore accounts. Ten minutes ago, my financial team initiated a full transfer of every dollar sitting in those accounts into a public trust registered in the name of the Polk County Children’s Hospital.”
"You... you did what?" Enzo’s voice cracked with sudden, explosive rage. "That’s forty million dollars! That’s my money!"
“It was my father's money,” Lorenzo corrected. “And by tomorrow morning, the federal prosecutors in Chicago will receive a complete, unredacted copy of your immunity agreement, along with proof that you violated the terms of your relocation by continuing to operate illegal shipping conduits through the port of Miami.”
"Lorenzo, you bastard!" Enzo screamed through the phone. "If you burn me, I’ll release the records that connect your legitimate companies to the dockland murders from 2016! I’ll send you to prison right alongside me!"
“Do it,” Lorenzo said calmly. “I’m not afraid of a cell, Enzo. But you... you can't survive without your wine, your estate, and your money. Let’s see how long your local security stays loyal when the checks stop clearing tomorrow morning.”
Lorenzo reached down and pressed the red button, cutting the satellite connection instantly.
He looked up at Marcus, who was shaking so violently his knees were knocking against the frame of the table.
“Stand up, Uncle,” Lorenzo said.

“Lorenzo... please,” Marcus wept, sinking to his knees on the carpet. “Where are you taking me?”
“Home,” Lorenzo said. “You’re going to stay in the sub-basement until I decide what to do with you.”
