Chapter 4 - The Apex Tower

The taller guard, whose name tag read Vance, didn't wait for Arthur to answer. His eyes dropped to the canvas bag on the floor, then to the subtle bulge beneath Elena’s coat.
"Hand over the bag, miss," Vance commanded, taking a step forward.
Elena stood her ground, pulling Sophia tighter against her chest. "I need to see Lorenzo Moretti."
"Everyone wants to see Mr. Moretti today," the second guard sneered, pulling a silenced handgun from his holster. "Turn around. Hands on the desk."
"Stop!" Arthur shouted, stepping between the guard and Elena. "Look at what she’s holding, you idiot! Look at the child!"
The guard froze. Vance leaned over Arthur’s shoulder, his eyes widening as he caught sight of the baby’s hazel eyes opening in the dim fluorescent light.
The air in the room instantly turned electric.
Vance pulled his radio from his belt, his hand shaking slightly. "Code Alpha on floor minus-one. Repeat, Code Alpha. Notify the Don immediately. We have the package."
Within ninety seconds, the delivery bay was cleared of all workers. Six additional armed men descended into the basement, forming a tight, impenetrable perimeter around Elena, Arthur, and the baby.
Elena was escorted not to an interrogation room, but to a private express elevator. The ride up to the seventy-second floor was completely silent, save for the hum of the high-speed motor and the sound of Elena softly humming a lullaby to keep Sophia calm.
When the elevator doors opened, Elena stepped into a vast, minimalist penthouse office overlooking the misty expanse of Manhattan. Floor-to-ceiling windows revealed a gray sky, but the room itself was dark, illuminated only by a roaring fire in a black marble fireplace.
Standing in front of the fire was a man.
Lorenzo Moretti was taller than he appeared on television. He wore a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing dark tattoos creeping up his forearms. His dark hair was silvered at the temples, and his jaw was set like iron. But his eyes—dark, bloodshot, and hollowed by agony—were fixed entirely on the bundle in Elena’s arms.
He took a step forward, then stopped, as if terrified that the sight before him was a hallucination brought on by grief.
"Sophia?" his voice was a low, raspy whisper that cracked on the second syllable.
Sophia whimpered, turning her head toward the sound of his voice.
Lorenzo crossed the room in three long strides. He didn't look at Elena. He didn't look at the guards. He reached out his massive, calloused hands and gently, reverently took the baby into his arms.
He pressed his face into the child’s soft curls, his broad shoulders shaking silently.
Elena watched as the legendary mob boss—a man feared by politicians and criminals alike—sank onto a leather sofa, holding his daughter as if she were the only real thing left in the world.
For ten minutes, no one spoke. The guards stood at attention near the doors, their faces unreadable, though Vance wiped a corner of his eye when no one was looking.
Finally, Lorenzo raised his head. He wrapped Sophia in his own cashmere sweater, resting her safely against his chest.
Then his eyes shifted to Elena.

The tenderness vanished, replaced instantly by an absolute, lethal coldness.
"Who are you?" Lorenzo asked, his voice dripping with authority. "And why should I let you leave this room alive?"
