Chapter 7 - The Unbroken Truth

At precisely nine o’clock the following morning, the executive boardroom on the seventieth floor of the Vance Tower was filled with thirty-four board members, major institutional shareholders, and high-powered legal counsel.
At the end of the long marble table sat Richard Sterling, looking visibly smug, with Julianna Ward seated discreetly in the gallery reserved for major family trust representatives.
The double doors opened with a concussive thud.
Arthur Vance walked in.
He wore a bespoke three-piece suit the color of obsidian. Behind him walked four men in gray suits carrying heavy leather briefcases, followed by Marcus, whose demeanor was that of an executioner arriving at the scaffold.
Arthur didn't take his seat at the head of the table. He stood, resting his palms flat against the polished marble, his gaze raking across the assembled men and women like an arctic wind.
"Julianna," Arthur began, his voice terrifyingly smooth. "You gave a very moving performance on the television last night. The ratings were exceptional."
Julianna cleared her throat, lifting her chin with practiced poise. "Arthur, everything I did was out of loyalty to this family. To Audrey’s legacy. We could not sit by and watch you fall victim to a calculated confidence scheme."
"Of course," Arthur replied. He signaled to one of the men behind him. "Distribute the files."
Thick folders bound in red tape were slammed down in front of every single board member.
"What is this?" Richard Sterling asked, frowning as he opened his copy.
"That," Arthur said, "is the complete forensic audit of Julianna Ward’s shell corporations over the past four years. Along with a wiretap transcript authorized by a federal judge at four o’clock this morning."
Julianna’s face drained of color. "Wiretaps? On what authority?"
"On the authority of corporate espionage and HIPAA violations," Arthur snapped, his voice dropping the veneer of politeness, hitting the room like a sledgehammer. "Three weeks before Audrey passed away, Julianna, you met with Dr. Harrison, Audrey’s palliative care physician. You offered his clinic an endowment of three million dollars if he would declare Audrey legally incompetent—specifically to invalidate any amendments she might make to her personal estate trust."
Gasps erupted around the boardroom. Several older members pushed their chairs back from the table in disgust.
"That’s a lie!" Julianna shrieked, rising to her feet.
"Dr. Harrison didn't take your bribe," Arthur continued relentlessly, stepping toward her with predatory grace. "Instead, he told Audrey. Audrey knew exactly who you were, Julianna. She knew you were positioning yourself to marry me before her body was even cold in the earth. And she knew that the moment she died, you would use every connection in this city to push yourself into my daughter's life."
Arthur slammed a flat manila envelope down directly in front of Julianna.
"Audrey recorded you, Julianna. Not just Elena. She recorded you when you visited her hospital room under the guise of bringing flowers. She recorded you telling her that she was 'holding Arthur back from his true potential' and that she should 'let go gracefully so someone capable could raise Chloe.'"
The silence in the boardroom was absolute. Julianna stood frozen, trembling, her mouth opening and closing without sound.
"And as for you, Richard," Arthur turned his gaze upon his managing partner.
Richard visibly flinched.
"You accessed the medical records of Elena Santos’s sister using the corporate health network’s administrative credentials. That is a federal felony carrying a mandatory five-year sentence. The FBI field office has already received the dossier. Two agents are waiting in the lobby downstairs to take you into custody."
Richard’s hands began to shake violently. "Arthur... please. We were trying to protect the stock price—"
"You were trying to protect your kickbacks from Julianna’s oil conglomerate," Arthur spat. "As of this moment, Richard, you are removed from the board. Julianna, every trust fund associated with the Ward name has been shorted across three international exchanges. By the time the closing bell rings today, your family will be fighting off bankruptcy."
Arthur turned his back on them, addressing the remaining, petrified board members.
"Elena Santos has never taken a dime from my family. Her sister’s medical bills were paid in full at seven o'clock this morning by a private foundation established in Audrey Vance’s name—an action my late wife explicitly requested in the final pages of her private journal."
Arthur buttoned his jacket and walked toward the exit.
At the door, he paused and looked back at Julianna, whose world had just collapsed around her ears.

"You said Elena didn't belong in my world," Arthur said quietly. "You were right. She is far too good for it."
