Chapter 6 - The Whispers and the Blackmail

Arthur swept into his private study, Elena following closely behind. Marcus activated the wall-mounted television, which was tuned to a prominent prime-time entertainment news broadcast.

On the screen sat Julianna Ward, looking exquisitely tragic in a black Chanel suit, dabbed with tears that caught the studio lights perfectly.

*"...and we were simply horrified,"* Julianna was telling the interviewer, her voice quivering with performative grief. *"Arthur Vance is a brilliant man, but he is fundamentally broken by Audrey’s passing. And now, an opportunist has taken advantage of that vulnerability. We have discovered that Elena Santos, the maid whom the child was coerced into naming, has deep financial motives."*

"What?" Elena gasped, clenching her fists. "That’s a lie!"

The screen cut to a graphic showing bank records and a blurry photograph of a run-down clinic in Brooklyn.

*"Miss Santos’s younger sister, Maria, suffers from chronic renal failure,"* the broadcast anchor announced. *"Medical debts totaling over one hundred and fifty thousand dollars have accumulated over the past eighteen months. Just days before the infamous gala, Miss Santos was threatened with the termination of her sister's dialysis care. We have statements from several household staff members alleging that Miss Santos frequently spent unsupervised hours alone with Audrey Vance during the late Mrs. Vance’s periods of extreme morphine-induced confusion."*

The anchor turned back to Julianna. *"Miss Ward, are you suggesting the recording was obtained under duress?"*

*"I am saying that Audrey Vance was a dying woman who would have said anything to protect her child,"* Julianna replied, looking directly into the camera lens with cold triumph. *"And I am calling upon the board of Vance Enterprises to intervene before a predatory grifter legally binds herself to one of the largest estates in the Western Hemisphere."*

The broadcast cut to commercial.

The study fell into a horrifying silence.

Elena was shaking violently, her breath coming in shallow gasps. "My sister... Maria..."

Arthur turned to her, his jaw clutched so tightly muscle twitched against his skin. "Is it true, Elena? Does your sister have kidney failure?"

Elena looked up at him, terrified by the darkness gathering in his eyes. "Yes! Yes, it’s true! Maria has been sick for two years. But Arthur, I swear to God on my mother’s soul, I never asked Audrey for a single dollar! Audrey found out about Maria because she overheard me crying in the pantry one night. She *offered* to pay for the treatments, and I refused! I told her it wasn't her burden! I took extra cleaning shifts on the weekends in Manhattan to pay the minimum balances!"

"Did you know Audrey was recording you?" Arthur asked, his voice low, vibrating with an intensity that was impossible to read.

"No!" Elena cried, tears spilling freely over her cheeks. "I didn't know about any recorder! I didn't know about Barnaby! If I had known, do you think I would have let Chloe stand up in front of all those monsters and paint a target on my back? Do you think I want the entire world calling me a thief and a gold-digger?"

She backed away toward the study doors, her pride shattering into pure agony.

"I can't do this," she sobbed. "I told you. I told you I didn't belong in your world. Your world is poison, Arthur. It takes love and turns it into dirt. I’m packing my things. I’m taking my sister, and we are leaving."

"Elena, wait!" Arthur stepped forward, reaching for her arm.

"Don't touch me!" she shouted, pulling away, her eyes blazing through her tears. "Don't you dare look at me like I’m a suspect! I loved your wife! I loved your daughter! And for a second... God help me, I thought you were different. But you’re just like the rest of them. You look at bank accounts, and you see guilt."

She turned and fled, the heavy oak doors slamming shut behind her.

Arthur stood in the center of the room, his fists clenched at his sides.

"Marcus," Arthur spoke, the coldness in his tone causing the seasoned security director to straighten his posture instantly.

"Sir?"

"Call Reynolds. Call the private intelligence unit," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a deadly, calculated register. "Find out who accessed Elena’s sister’s medical records. Find out how Julianna got those bank statements. And Marcus?"

"Yes, Mr. Vance?"

"Order the jet. Have the executive board convened in the main auditorium by nine o'clock tomorrow morning. Julianna Ward wanted a public war. I am going to give her an extinction event."
