Chapter 5 - The Legal Vanguard

By eight o’clock the following morning, my living room had transformed into a legal war room.
Marcus Vance, the senior partner of Vance & Sterling Legal Associates and my late grandfather’s closest confidant, sat across from me at the mahogany dining table. Spread out before him were bank statements, property deeds, hospital records, and a stack of legal filings three inches thick.
“Claire,” Marcus began, his voice carrying the calm authority of forty years in high-stakes litigation. “I want to apologize to you. Your grandfather entrusted me to look after your interests, and I allowed this opportunistic parasite to slip through the cracks.”
“He was very convincing, Marcus,” I said softly, nursing Emma in a comfortable rocking chair by the window. “He spent two years pretending to be the kindest, most attentive man in the world. He waited until I was pregnant, isolated, and grieving my grandfather’s passing to show who he really was.”
“Well, his performance is officially over,” Marcus said, opening a sleek leather binder. “Here is where we stand. First, Ryan’s personal accounts are entirely depleted. Over the last six months, he accumulated nearly four hundred thousand dollars in illicit gambling debts across offshore sports betting platforms.”
I closed my eyes briefly. “Four hundred thousand?”
“Yes. And he was being pressured aggressively by loan sharks. That explains the urgency. He didn't just want your money eventually; he needed a multi-million-dollar payout immediately to save his own skin. The forged insurance policies were his desperate escape hatch.”
Marcus tapped a pen against the table. “Second, Detective Harris formally charged Linda Miller with domestic assault, child endangerment—given that the cold water struck Emma as well—and attempted coercion. Ryan is currently being held as an accessory to those charges, alongside felony counts of identity theft and insurance fraud.”
“Will they get bail?”
“Linda might make bail by this afternoon if she finds a bondsman willing to take the risk, though she has no assets left,” Marcus replied. “Ryan’s bail will be set significantly higher due to the flight risk associated with his debts. But just in case, I have already secured an emergency ex-parte temporary restraining order. They are legally barred from coming within one thousand feet of you, Emma, this property, or any Sterling estate asset.”
“That isn't enough, Marcus,” I said, looking down at my daughter’s sleeping face. “I don't just want them restrained. I want every legal tie between Ryan Miller and my daughter severed forever. I want him stripped of parental rights.”
Marcus offered a grim, approving nod. “Under normal circumstances, severing parental rights takes months or years. But with the forged life insurance policy on Emma, the surveillance footage showing deliberate child endangerment, and his impending felony indictments, we have unprecedented leverage. We are filing for an expedited, fault-based divorce on the grounds of extreme cruelty, fraud, and attempted extortion.”

“Do it,” I commanded. “And Marcus? Cut off Linda’s mother-in-law suite lease in the downtown tower. Freeze the accounts. Let her discover what life looks like without my grandfather’s money funding her delusion.”
