Chapter 4 - Purging the Poison

Arthur entered through the side entrance a few minutes later, followed by Mrs. Gable, the trusted private nurse who had taken care of my mother during her final months. The moment Mrs. Gable saw me, her eyes filled with fierce sympathy.

“Oh, my poor darling,” she whispered, wrapping a thick, dry cashmere blanket around my trembling shoulders. “Sit down right now. Let me take Emma.”

I surrendered my daughter into Mrs. Gable’s warm, capable hands. Seeing Emma cradled against someone who genuinely cared for her brought the first tears to my eyes—not of pain, but of profound relief.

Arthur handed me a steaming cup of herbal tea. “The police have taken both of them into custody for questioning, Claire. Detective Harris took the insurance documents and the security footage from the hallway.”

I paused with the mug halfway to my lips. “The security footage?”

Arthur gave a thin, grim smile. “Your grandfather didn’t install cameras inside the private bedrooms, but every common area—the living room, the kitchen, the hallways—has had continuous surveillance since the system was upgraded last year. The property management company archives everything off-site.”

My jaw tightened. “So there is high-definition video of Linda dumping the water on me? And of Ryan standing there smirking?”

“Every second of it,” Arthur confirmed. “Including the audio. Ryan’s statement, *‘Mom’s trying to teach you,’* was recorded with pristine clarity. It has already been transferred to a secure flash drive and handed over to law enforcement.”

While Mrs. Gable took Emma upstairs to the nursery to feed and change her, Arthur accompanied me into the guest wing where Linda had stayed. The room was a disaster—expensive clothes scattered across the floor, half-empty wine bottles on the nightstand, all paid for with the credit cards I had foolishly authorized under Ryan’s name.

As Arthur and a security technician inspected the perimeter, the technician stopped abruptly near the ornamental floor lamp in the corner. He reached down and unscrewed a small black casing hidden beneath the shade.

“What is that?” I asked, my pulse quickening.

“A nanny cam,” the technician replied, holding up the tiny lens. “Self-recording, equipped with local Wi-Fi transmission. It’s pointed directly through the cracked doorway toward the main living room couch.”

I stared at the device. Linda hadn't just poured the water in a moment of spontaneous rage. They had set up a camera.

“Why would they record it?” I asked, bewildered.

Arthur sighed deeply, his brow furrowed with utter disgust. “They were baiting you, Claire. If you had snapped, if you had retaliated physically or screamed in a frenzy, they would have used that footage in family court tomorrow morning to claim you were violently unstable and posed a danger to your child.”

A chilling silence settled over the room. They hadn't just wanted my inheritance. They had planned a systematic, calculated character assassination to strip me of Emma, lock me away in a psychiatric facility, and feast on the family trust fund uncontested.

“Change every lock in this house,” I told Arthur, my voice steady as stone. “Cancel every credit card. Revoke every access code. Tomorrow morning, we go to war.”
